Hi all! Starting a thread for those applying to the UBC NP Program for fall 2025. I am an RN who graduated from UBC Nursing in 2017. I have been working in acute palliative care since graduation and briefly worked in home health nursing. I also have a degree from SFU (sociology and gerontology). The UBC NP Program is the only one I am applying to, so fingers crossed.
I'm really sorry. That's so unbelievably hard, especially when you want it so much. Not much advice to give, as I'm not sure how they evaluated applications. I had a strong GPA, 6 years of work experience, strong references, and a very specific area that I'm hoping to work in for my essay. I do feel my essay was a big reason I was accepted but I won't really ever know. I've heard they like to hear really specific goals for the program. I truly do think things happen for a reason even though I know that won't make things any easier.

I also applied to UVic and am still waiting to hear back from them- hoping to hear back before my decision is due on March 25th as I am still indecisive about which school. I wasn't expecting to get in. I was fully anticipating a rejection because I applied with just two years of experience.
Congratulations to everyone who received an acceptance offer, this is such a huge achievement. Sending hugs to those who didn't get the result they wanted, don't give up!
Firstly congratulations 🎊 ☺️ super excited for you to take on this journey!
May I ask what GPA/references/soi you had, as I also applied with 2 years but wasn't shortlisted unfortunately!
I will definitely try again next year but would love to know what I can improve on!!

Congrats! I recall you were waitlisted last year from the old forum! Would you be able to share tips on what you did differently on your application this year?
EX. what you focused on in your essay, references, experience, etc.
I got some more experience and I wasn't waitlisted or accepted this time around...

Yes of course. Things I did differently and what I added to my experience when I applied this time round:
1. I added volunteer experience, where I volunteered twice a month at a shelter. Doing basic wound care dressings.
2. I completely re-did my SOI and this time round I had like 10 people read it and give feedback. This included co-workers, my husband, teachers and non medical people. I worked on this for 2 months. Rewrote it 3-4 times. I really focused on being unique and showing flexibility. Keeping it very clear and to the point.
3. I had all 3 new references (doctor, CNS, CNE) they all had masters level or above. I told them what areas to focus on when writing my references so this ensured they weren't all similar.
4. I redid my CV and made it really detailed. My CV was 8 pages long.
5. I have certified practice in STI/CM and OUD. So this time when I applied I highlighted how many consults and scripts I've done. Which I didn't do last time. I added this to the CV.
I hope this helps. I'm happy to answer anything else you may have questions on if what I did differently.
