Hello - I've been accepted to UVIC and UNBC and having a hard time deciding. I live on the island, so UVIC seems like the obvious choice. However, when I compare the program outlines, it seems like the UVIC program is a bit heavier, particularly on the general Master's courses vs. NP specific clinical knowledge (although both programs are roughly the same number of credits). UVIC also requires a 300/400 level stats course to be completed prior to program start, which will cost me $1,000 to do online.

Anyone have thoughts on this? I joined a facebook group of 2023 NP students from all the schools and asked, but unfortunately didn't really get any helpful responses from anyone there...

Same boat here, too! I was leaning towards UNBC, but not sure how I feel about it being stretched over 8 semesters. I'm also on the Island, so UVic is starting to seem more appealing, minus having to do stats 😅

If it helps you can take stats through TRU and its way more affordable esp. if you buy a used textbook 🙂

Also all the NP programs are heavily subsidized so the general masters costs don't usually apply. Best to ask the schools directly

I'm in stats right now at TRU and I have to say it's a lot of work!!

@Island RN to NP

Did UVic notify you by email that you were accepted? What does your status say on the portal?

Specializes in ICU, ER.

I have heard nothing but good experiences with the UVIC NP Program. A couple of my friends there absolutely love the teachers and it's great for placements back on the island or lower mainland for practicums. 2 year vs 2.5 now is also a bonus. Not sure why UNBC changed...?

If this helps at all, I did my stats course through TRU OL last year and it was actually really good learning and not too difficult. Helps with better understanding research papers. I just did it at my own pace. If you are on the island I would go with UVIC and build connections close to home? Totally up to you. 😊

Congrats to everyone who has received admission offers!

I'm curious how many of us are planning to do FT vs PT for the programs that offer PT (TRU, UNBC)? I'm leaning towards doing a PT course load so that I can hopefully keep my current line. Would love to hear what others are planning to do.

Oh that's great to hear! Someone I did my BSN with is currently in first year at UVIC and he said its a heavy workload... (But he was also a really heavy studier during undergrad). I'm really disappointed in the change at UNBC... I think that has sealed to deal for me to choose UVIC. An extra 8 months of school and an extra $6,000 in tuition is a major deterrent for me.

My status says "Recommended by Department." I emailed them to clarify and they said it means I was accepted.

Good to know, thanks! Can I ask which Stats course you took?

Also since finding out about the program change at UNBC, I think I'm going to go with UVIC...

I'm facing the same decision, also living on the Island. Personally I really wanted the PT program to spread out the program requirements and not rush things. I was pretty disappointed to hear they are essentially doubling the cost of the UNBC program by classifying you as a FT student despite the program being spread out. So, paying FT tuition for a longer period, and also factoring in the cost of traveling north at least 3x over the course of the program (although you may have to travel for UVIC as well). I am leaning toward UVIC but mostly for financial/convenience reasons, I can't really speak to the course content. I think just like BSN programs, there are some very conflicting outsider/insider perspectives, national rankings don't seem to be based on criteria that really impact the student learning experience, you'll get out what you put in etc etc. If you're into rural practice UNBC probably has more to offer there. If you're staying in an urban island community maybe less of a difference. I am already almost done the stats course though so I don't really have to factor that in.

Totally agree with everything you said! Honestly since finding out about the change to the UNBC program it's made my decision for me. Going with UVIC 👍

For anyone curious, UViC admissions confirmed there are just 5 seats allotted for post-masters applicants.

UVic is the only BC uni to offer a post-masters NP stream from what I have been able to find. Let me know if anyone knows otherwise!

Congratulations to all of you who got in to both schools! What an accomplishment.

My first choice would have been UNBC; their program is more NP-focused as opposed to Master's focused, if that makes sense. My partner is in her final semester in the NP Program at UVic and the first year was full of the classic philosophy classes that drove her nuts. Still a great program though, but UNBC seems a bit better on that one in need-to-know information. I obviously weighed in with the "part-time" ness of UNBC... but it just makes it so you can work during the program. Which for me would be an absolute bonus. Wish I was given an option but I am rooting for all of you!

Did they mention when they'd be sending an actual offer letter?
