University of Alberta Nursing 2nd Degree 2016

Hello!

I figured it would be a good idea to start a thread for 2016.

I am so nervous about applying but so excited about starting nursing school next year. My situation is a little unique. I am also applying to two schools in the US for the Accelerated BSN/MSN programs and not sure if that is a good idea since I will come back here anyways. Leaving my kids and husband for 21 months is so hard so hence my reason for applying to U of A.

I will be retaking my Micro and Physiology to get As and not Bs. I just want to make sure I am competitive enough since my degree and pre-reqs are from the US.

All the best to everyone!!

Hey tparno, where did you get the stats about 3.3 gpa? Is it guaranteed admission if an applicant has all the pre-reqs but has a gpa of 3.0-3.3?

It's NOT a guaranteed acceptance but if you have 3.3 then it's a good chance. On their website it says 3.0 GPA is the minimum and someone on this website said 3.3. If you have 3.5 or higher then I would say you're in. Also a lot of the scholarships say they need a minimum 3.3.

Just apply! Don't be discouraged.

It's been a while since I last posted and it was for '15 entrance to the AD. So for those of you who are interested, here's info I know some of you are hoping to get. ;)

1) Last year, our GPA cutoff was ~3.5 or so I heard. I have also heard that our average GPA was ~3.8. There are no guaranteed admissions unless you meet the minimum competitive average for your intake year. To be safe, aim for 3.5 if you can (get those extra points from your prereqs)

2) Acceptances can run up until the end of June (dare I say even first week of August)... or so at least from our cohort's experience. Make sure everything is lined up for your documents and your i's are dotted! Having them in order -> immunizations (get this early), HCP FA & CPR, forms, transcripts, police clearances, etc. Trust me, it will make your application process much smoother. Even if you think you have everything lined up, double, triple, quadruple check etc. Make sure you keep copies of documents you send.

3) If you have questions, CALL! Be resourceful and get the information you need! Now is a great time to start doing this especially if you are going to be in this program. This is an essential skill.

4) Once you get in, you have to remember to maintain a competitive GPA. Some of your classmates may be former Internationally Educated Doctors, those with Masters, or PhDs. You will be marked against everyone else, including them- not to say those who don't have extra credentials other than the Baccalaureate degrees are any less of a competition. Some classmates will just have an edge over the others likely due to experience.

5) It is a stressful program. During your intake, you will be given tips on how to manage your time. LISTEN TO THEM! This is pertinent information and is especially true if you have children.

I know these are straight forward, but I can't emphasize how these are so important. I don't think I am able to respond to messages in my inbox so I won't be able to reply to them.

Thank you so much Jamay10 for the information! But everyone should apply, just in case!!

Jamay10, is the program still using the self-learning format? I've heard from other people posting that they went away from that. I just want to be sure!

Thank you!

I'm going to be pragmatic.

Ideally you should apply if you are meeting the minimum. However, application fees aren't cheap. So if you know you are only meeting the minimum, you run the risk of being told to try next year and beef up your marks for the mean time. Also, it is to prepare you for what is ahead of the program - where 88 can be (and has been) a B-. That said, I don't know how the intake gpa cutoff will look like for 2016 as they are now allowing the Honors program for the AD. Just putting my 2 cents in from my experience.

I'm not quite sure of what you mean by 'self-learning'. Can you elaborate more on it? "Self learning" is something that we all do in the program, whether you are told to or not. You have to fish for information in order to supplement your learning, research, or presentation. Many hours can be spent on researching the drug and its side effects on your patient who has to take 20+ drugs and you need to know onset, peak time, and half life.

They are allowing the Honors program for AD now! This is the first year.

Sorry, I believe it's the CBL format? I read that the lectures were self-taught rather than professor teaching. I was hoping they would get away from the self-learning and towards the professor teaching.

Hi everyone! I've applied to the UofA after degree in Camrose. I'm really hoping to get in this September. I just finished my microbiology so the uofa is waiting on my final transcript! Are there any others here who've applied to Camrose?

Hello! I applied in Feb, finished prereqs in April and my AGPA is 3.79. My status is still "Decision Pending". Anyone still waiting?

Yeah I applied too, because I feel there are a lot of applicants with high GPAs applying to Edmonton, and honestly those with the higher GPAs are using nursing as their back up if they don't get into medicine. Camrose has a lower GPA acceptance around 3.1 from what I've been told so stay positive!

Thanks for the info Nini.mango. I'm still waiting to hear if I've been accepted but that gives me some hope! I called a cpl weeks back and they had forgotten to request my transcript from grant Mac. At the time she told me they were just going through all the grant Mac transcripts and then would have to send them to the nursing faculty. She guessed I would know by mid-June, along with the other applicants. So if anyone else is in the same boat as me - finished a course in April and waiting to hear, calling student connect is probably a good idea to make sure your transcript didn't get forgotten.

HI EVERYONE!

I just got acceptance to the after degree at uofa today!!

For anyone that is curious: i got 3.50 GPA on the last 10 courses (i took 5 in fall and 5 in winter)

See you all soon!

Do we need to buy a stethoscope before class?
