University of Alberta Nursing After Degree 2015

Published

Hi everyone!

I thought it would be beneficial to start up a thread for those who applied to the UofA After Degree program for 2015. I noticed that one hasn't been started yet.

I applied to the program but I am still waiting on a reply. Has anyone heard back from admissions as of yet?

All the best to everyone!!!

Yes they should. They will go back a minimum of 24 most recent credits to calculate your AGPA. If you only took, as an example, 21 credits, this fall, they will go back to your last most recent semester to complete the 24 credits. If they go back into your winter semester (eg. 12 credits), they will also go back into your fall semester (12 credits = full schoolyear of 24 credits). Long story short, they will assess your gpa based on the 21 credits you recently did plus the 24 credits you have done in you last year's degree. BUT, if you took a spring and summer course previous to this coming semester and they are worth 3 credits, they will only look at your most recent credits done plus the 3 credits you did on the summer to reach the full 24 credits for your AGPA.

Hope this makes sense.

Great! This was super helpful. I'm really hopeful all the pre-reqs go well so I can start next fall!

hi am new around here, read a lot of comments here, quite helpful. i have a question about prerequisites, will be starting some courses in macewan this September, when is the latest time to finish them, i intend to spread them till june next year, does that affect my chances of getting in, as i already applied for 2016

Sorry! Would you expand on the AGPA calculation?

My question is when do they stop bringing in grades...say if a student does the prerequisites along with some upgrading and scores very well (3.7 on 5 classes after their degree, each class being 3 credits. So a total of 15 credits), how may classes would they pull in from their degree?

The AGPA looks at 24 credits so 8 classes. Would they average the GPA of the last term and pull in the remaining 9 credits ? Or would they go back to include the credits of the whole winter term or both fall/winter term, which if a student takes 5 classes in each is 15 credits prospectively.

Then their AGPA would be calculated say if they include all winter credits...on 15+15 = 30 credits.

Does anyone have think answer or know who I can contact who can say...the nursing department is very busy and I can't get through.

Thanks!

hi rolan,

im also from the philippines. where did you graduate and what was the grading system in your university? i am from feu and grading is different, 1.0 as highest and 5 .0 as F.

i am trying to compute my own gpa with the equivalence here but im not sure if i did it right.i just applied too for 2016, have you?

Hi guys!

First of all: CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who got accepted!! :woot:

So I am applying to the UofA for Fall 2016 (BScN) but I feel so discouraged from all the reviews about UofA's nursing program. My friend's friend is in the nursing program and she loves it but EVERYONE on this website is saying avoid it at all costs. I am so confused!!

I read that people hate CBL and someone mentioned in a thread that they stopped it in Fall 2014. Is this true? Anyone currently studying there and can give me some feedback?

Thanks so much!

Hello. I applied on September 5 and was accepted on November 4th. I currently have a GPA of 3.92, but I am not sure what the cutoff is this year. My friend has also confirmed with admission that if you do not have the Medical Micro Biology course you will not receive conditional acceptance. Hope this helps!

Specializes in 1 year experience in ER.

Partially true.

The new collaborative program are moving towards the lecture based learning similiar to MacEwan.

Class of 2016, 2017 aftrer degree cohort still used CBL. The best way to describe CBL is self-directed learning; you need to teach yourself. If you don't know ask your instructor. Beware of catch 22 (You don't know what you do not know).

I'm currently an after degree student that was accepted in the 2014 cohort.

In terms of GPA this was what I was told: you need 3.0 GPA to be considered, if you possess 3.5 or higher you will received acceptance if you have the prerequisite and there's space available. The registrar will fill the remaining seats after the deadline is past from the highest GPA down.

GPA is calculated by the most recents terms (minimum 24 credits) This is isn't that difficult to achieve if you put effort in. I got in with a 3.19 cumulative GPA (2.68 on last 60 credits).

FYI: my first year AD was 3.53

Hi, I'm also very unsure of how the quota is filled. I asked the faculty if there was any advantage of finishing the prereqs in advance to the documentation deadline and was told no. They said they don't offer acceptance as a first come first serve basis. Which is confusing. I'm wondering if you know how they process them. I'm finishing the anatomy and physiology right now and planned around this information, so it will be complete May 16th. Really though, I've had to take time off of work to study. If the program fills though, I'd rather take more time on the course and re-apply. I think my final AGAP will be 3.58, so I don't think my chances are very good. I'm so disappointed I didn't finish the course faster now. Jamay do you know?

Thanks for your reply! I got admitted to the program (BScN starting Fall 2016). It is so hard to find proper reviews online on the new redesigned collaborative program. Do you have more information on the program? Whether it's good or not, is there any CBL or was it removed, and overall student satisfaction?

Partially true.

While I can't speak on the After Degree program, I am in the Collaborative program but its just the condensed form. I just finished third year and they have been testing the lecture-based studies with our cohort since my second year.

I can say that the newer way of teaching has been phenomenally better and I don't think they're going to implement CBL anytime soon due to our recommendations and concerns.

Students have been making it clear that we do not want CBL, and they appear to be listening.

Also, they have changed the collaborative program compared to our year. So students don't get clinical experience until second year and clinicals/lectures are 12-week rotations compared to just 6week clinical then 6 week lectures. Not really sure what to think about that.
