I don’t see many posts or threads about University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) Capstone College of Nursing. They offer FNP or PMHNP or dual degree. I am applying for their FNP program Fall 2020. Anyone else also applying? Or anyone who has gone through their program, tell me about it. Thanks!

I do not start until the Fall, but from what I’ve read, part time is probably better while working full time. That’s what I am doing, I will work full time until my employer decides they just can’t accommodate clinicals anymore! Then I’ll work PRN somewhere I guess. That’s the plan.

Honestly, the first semester was tough. I made all As but it wasn't easy. Strangely, health assessment was one of the toughest classes. You have to make videos of yourself doing an assessment on someone. There are like 4 separate ones. They are long and you must be precise. Adv Patho was a beast too.
Hardest part is trying to find clinical spots. They have a list they give you of clinics and facilities that have current contracts with the college. That doesn't mean you get a spot. It just means you don't have to go through the contracting process if you can find someone willing to precept you. It's stressful doing that while school cause you are emailing and calling while doing the school work. Contracts can take anywhere from a month to 6 months. It's hard to find a spot especially for PMHNP. There simply aren't as many facilities or practices out there as compared to FNP.
I chose Alabama due to the low tuition cost and because it is a very large University with a good reputation. And well, they gave me Scholarship that covers my tuition and leaves me with a lot of money left so I don't have to work full-time. Having said that, If I found a program that guaranteed me a clinical spot without me having to spend countless hours a day searching, I would pick that program over one that pays my tuition.
Hi,
I was accepted to UA FNP/PMHNP for Fall 2020 and I'm waiting to hear from one more school (which finds preceptors). I am dreading the mad search for preceptors. Would you tell me what the classes are like? How are they taught? Were the instructors helpful ? How did you choose what classes to take in what order?
Are you looking at other schools even though you started at UA?
Thanks for any information.
The classes are chosen for you and are all online except your clinicals. Lots of busy work, papers, etc.
If you can find a school that will find you a preceptor choose that program. I lost my clinical site for this Summer due to this virus. The school isn't being very helpful. With more than half the students not having clinicals, they are going to continue as planned and leave us behind. I will have to sit out till August if nothing changes. I think clinicals could be a problem due to this virus well into next year which is why I am thinking about not continuing.

Thank you so much for writing. I sincerely appreciate it. You confirmed my gut feelings about the clinical issue. Thank you for being up front about lack of support and issue with clinicals. I hope something opens up for you. Are you considering applying to another school now or just going to take a break?
Hello everyone
I start at USA pretty soon and wanted to know if anyone has the name of the textbooks for patho-pathological basis of advanced nursing in the which I will take in the fall and pharmacology of advanced practice nurses which I will take in the Spring. I would like to begin reading, if possible. If anyone knows the name of the textbooks for the PMHNP courses that would be a great help as well. Thank you so much

After calling to get it all straightened out, my application was officially “completed” and I got an email a day or two after asking for me to sit for a virtual interview. It can be done on your own time, because they are pre-recorded questions. They tape your response. Maybe it isn’t required by all applicants(??). But you can always call and see what the next step is for you.
do you remember what the questions were? and how much time they gave you to answer them?
