but even if schip is fully funded, millions of children will still be excluded from health care coverage.

up until now, medicaid and the schip program have made great strides in providing children with health insurance. but even with their successes, one out of every nine of our children is still without health insurance and millions more are underinsured. as congress considers reauthorization of schip this year, we have a unique opportunity to take the next logical, achievable and moral step that would guarantee comprehensive health and mental health care to all children and pregnant women. we at the children's defense fund propose a plan whereby children’s health coverage under medicaid and schip would be consolidated into a single program. this will include a guaranteed, comprehensive benefits package nationwide for children whose family incomes are at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty level (topping at about $62,000 a year for a family of four).

under the proposal, children currently enrolled in medicaid, schip and means-tested federal programs like school lunch and food stamps would be enrolled automatically, with an opportunity for parents to opt out. uninsured children could also be automatically enrolled when they are born, enter school or get a social security card, again with the opportunity to opt out.

...

another element of the proposal would substantially increase reimbursements to health care providers so children can actually get health services when they need them. and there would be no additional cost to states for child coverage expansion or enhanced benefits.

health coverage can be provided to every child in america in 2007. the funding necessary to expand coverage to all children and pregnant women would be the equivalent to just nine days of defense department spending in 2007, and three months of the tax cuts to the richest one percent of americans this year.

which is of the greater moral value? 20,000 plus in tax cuts for dick cheney and his family or health care for poor children in your community?

I am very proud of my life.

I am Christian not secular.

I have helped more than one young girl decide not to abort her baby by helping her find an alternative.

I've been the best wife I could be for more than 40 years.

My kids are neither in jail nor on welfare. They have associate degrees and my son supported his wife all the way to a masters at age 26.

I am glad for the opportunities to volunteer for the Red Cross blood drives, to visit and bring books, filmd, and video games to veterans in rehab, to play with kids in a shelter, and to work for the common good.

Most of all I am proud of the nursing care I've provided in five decades.

All nurses should be proud of our valuable work.

AND no one who has contributed nursing care for nearly thirty years should be denied healthcare.

God bless you all. I pray for those who broadcast hate and those who listen. It is really sad. We Americans can be so much better than this.

Thankfully most of us are.

Yes - I feel the same way you Space Nurse - I pray for all those who broadcast hate as well - I pray for those who try to force socialism on this great country - I also pray for American citizens that are working hard and have health insurance while the IV drug user with no job has full health, dental and vision coverage because he doesn't have a job. I pray for everyone that takes personal responsibility to improve their own lives and stops blaming everyone else for his/her own problems, I pray for Israel. God Bless you all, oh yeah and one more thing, I pray that gay marriage is never passed in this country.

Whatever happend to personal responsibility? If youve (no one in paticular) been working your whole life then retire and dont plan a way to pay for future potential medical problems I wont be crying any rivers over anyones situation. I dont know why we cant hold adults to a standard of being able to provide the basic safe guards for themselves.

Because Ann, its really "You're Fault" if someone is a criminal or drug addict, failure etc... somehow you didnt help them enough(indirectly) as society on a whole failed them, its never about personal responsibility Ann, its all about blaming everyone else for your own problem and feeling guilty for it when it arises.

I've been wanting to ask this, and this is a good post to lead in:

Why this hatred for the wealthy? I'm not wealthy, though as a CRNA I make a pretty good living. Why the vitriol? In most cases, the wealthy became wealthy through their own hard work. They took advantage of opportunities that were presented, and often made their own opportunities. Why resent them for what they earn? Why the presumption that they somehow don't deserve what they earn?

No one hates the rich. What people hate is when the rich are given tax breaks and corporate welfare, while the poor and middle class continue to struggle to make ends meet. I have very acomplished folks in my own family who make an excellent living, I do not resent them, I am proud of them. I have bragged about my own children ad nauseum on these forums and would not dream of taking away their or any hard working persons acomplishments. You and others are totally misconstruing my remarks. When I say something about the rich , it is not a personal hatred or vendetta against a certain group of our society, every citizen of this country deserves equal rights, not some more "equal" than others. Warren Buffet the richest person in the world has said that the poor and middle class are unfairly treated. It is my style to sometimes be sarcastic or bring in a joke in my arguments,to emphasise my point, it is NOT personal.I do hear alot of vitriol coming from some folks posting to this forum, makes me wonder why too.Outright rudeness and demeaning remarks directed at a certain poster is not a way to get credibility . I am not refering to your post,so relax.

No one hates the rich? Are you sure about that? Its a pretty broad statement. You talk about the Rich getting tax break while the poor guy gets screwed. Actually I know a single woman with 8 kids, she has a 4 bedroom apartment in Manhattan(section 8 housing) that she pays $120 a month for, she does not pay for food because she has government assistance. She had all the furniture in her apartment paid for, it is nice stuff 2.....I think she got like $12,000 back on her taxes...she goes to best buy every weekend and buys DVD's because she has no expenses, only disposable income...of course at the expense of my tax money. Is this what you mean by the rich screwing the poor?

Oh you mean class equalization? So like there shouldnt be rich and poor people? Everyhing should be equal? Hasn't that been tried in countries like...oh....CUBA? NORTH KOREA? SOVIET UNION?

What do you define as an equal right, are you saying healthcare is an inalienable right under the US constitution? What about universal healthcare for illegal aliens, is that equal as well?

I think you are really a socialist in sheeps clothing, no offense. The thing is, I can say i am a capitalist, no problem i can lay it out on the table and not feel "guilty" because of it. why can't peopel just lay it out there and say what they are really for?

If you would read my posts you would see that I am pro individual responsibility.

Does anyone think that it is possible to equally embrace the concept of personal responsibility and social responsiblity in one human being?

When we were called the "N" word and threatened with physical harm if we didn't step into the gutter "When a Texan walks down the street" my Grandma told us, "Bless his heart, he doesn't kno any better."

So now it is the "L" word.

I know I'm successful. I also don't believe that social responsibility is a mental illness.

Once again , twisting what people say to fit your own agenda does not give you credibility. This is not a class war, we are advocating Universal Healthcare, the commies are not infiltrating our government, sheesh.I do not advocate Universal Healthcare for any but citizens of this country. Some may disagree, but that is my stance.Germany, Denmark, Sweden, England, Australia, Canada are not communist last I looked. Were the slaves afforded freedom under the constitution, were women allowed to vote, what happened that changed that? REFORM.Oh yes, my oldest daughter who is a Navy nurse is even more liberal than I am, could she be a commie infiltrator?
