Unitek College LVN program... good or Bad??

Updated:   Published

I was just wondering if anyone has attended the LVN program at Unitek College in Fremont or Santa Clara California? and if you can answer a few questions for me:

How long is the program?

What is the cost of the program?

NCLEX-PN passing rate?

and lastly, would you recommend this school?

thanks!

Have you posted these exact same questions in the California Nurses' Forum on this site? Perhaps your questions will receive answers. Good luck!

If you are going to go there and waste that kind of money, go see Edith at Mission College in Santa Clara.

Hello, my name is Janet Eells. I am a 48 year old 2005 graduate of Unitek College. I took my course at the Santa Clara division of Unitek. My college experience at Unitek was a wonderful positive experience. My past school experience was not a great one so I was hesitant going to college.

Unitek College's Vocational Nursing Program is 43 weeks long and consisting of 40 hours per week Monday through Friday.

My class instructor Dr. Madhu was inspirational in my learning all the Medical Knowledge I needed to be successful in the Medical field. He taught me not only what textbook learning I needed but also how important it was to be/act professionally.

The hands-on Lab time gave me the confidence to perform blood draws, give injections and take blood pressures along with many other performances. Using our classmates for these procedures was vital to my confidence when it came to doing all this on actual patients.

I now work for a Physician in the Family Medicine division in Santa Cruz. By working in Family Practice I get to work with a lot of procedures that I learned about at Unitek.

Thank-you Unitek!!!

Your not a recruiter for Unitek, by chance, are you? :lol2:

LOL MSDOBSON!!! :)

I wish there was something like this in SoCal. All of the LVN-RN programs seem to be in the upstate??

I have heard a rumor that Stanbridge is going to do an RN program (ADN)

Thanks, I love reading all the posts on here, it really has boosted my morale!!

$27,000 for the LVN - RN 30 unit option. hmmm this is sounding really good right about now. If they have clinicals in Sacramento, CA I am strating with them. I considered WCC but they was over $40,000 ..i can't do that.

Hell, we're lucky to even HAVE private schools like these down here. Five or ten years ago, if you wanted to be a nurse in NorCal, you had one of two options. CC or Uni...and both were as impacted then as they are now.

At least with these private colleges, we now have a third choice. And you better believe that OTHER private colleges are looking to get into the game! Obviously there is money to be had.

My thoughts exactly, B. 40K made me a bit queasy, but at least it was a confirmed RIGHT NOW, rather than a "sit on a list and hope for a miracle."

I'm going with Unitek. I've searched out all the past and preset threads here and on other nursing boards, and the haven't found any red flags. I also went to the CA-BON to check their credentials, and two of the four schools are accredited, whille the other two are approved, pending accreditation.

What area of nursing are you currently working in , or plan to work in?

I was a CNA for many years in the 80's, then became an EMT.

Then life got in the way and here we are.

I'm going to get my LVN first, THEN after working for a while, IF I find that I really like the profession, I wll take an LVN-RN Bridge course so I can have more opportunities (cue vista music).

I'd really like to work in an acute setting, rather than linger in LTC. Did that for too many years as a CNA. Don't relish going back as an LVN.

I'd like to give a shot at the "travelling nurses" gig. To do this, I need to have R.N. after my name, or a bazillion years worth of acute specialty.

But, I'm 44, almost 45 years old NOW. If going the LVN > Bridge > RN route is the quickest way to get me on the floor and working, then that's what it will have to be! :lol2:
