I'm new at this facility and they have a union, you don't have a say wether or not you want to be in the union - it's automatic unless your in managment.
My story - I have two small kids at home - 1 and 3 yrs. my DH works Monday - Friday 7 -5. I work part time (5x's in 2 week period) 11-7 (those hours work great) I get home and nap when my kids do.
Anyways being in the union, if the facility has so many call ins and no volunteers, they mandate well each time you say no and sign -it's an occurence - after 3 occurences you will be fired! REGARDLESS -
After all the time I put into orientation, schedules that were changed and my kids having to go different places for childcare I may be fired by the end of July at the rate we're going!
I am so livid! I don't know what to do. DH says let them fire me - but I don't want that on my record. I'd rather quit and find a place that has no union and start all over. It sucks - i love the facility, nurse manager, patients, staff.

And people think that unions are there to protect the worker!!

The thing is, I don't see how the union has anything to do with it if you manager is ok with it. If she's ok with it, you wouldn't be written up for the occurance and the union wouldn't know anything about it. What does she say about it?

I agree with fergus51. If your manager agrees with your schedule, the union need never know. I worked for a union shop, where my DOCS told me directly that they went around the union all the time. Whatever they wanted to do, they did, the union was not running their organization. You have to develop a positive relationship with your manager and make sure she is aware of your situation. If she does not agree to work with you, without protecting you from the union, then it is time to look for a new employer. Good luck.
the thing is, the manager is so family that she totally understands where I am coming from but she has no pull - when it comes to stuff like that. I've had CNA's tell them (NM & ANM) that they are going to lose a good nurse because of the occurance thing.

I am a pre- nursing student and just so confused on what to do. I am a wife, and a mother of 1 with one on the way. I am the bread winner for the household, so I have no clue how I am going to go to school and afford to pay all the bills plus daycare for my little ones. If anyone has any suggestions please post a reply back to me. Thanks:uhoh3:

Frazzled - It might be better to start your own thread, instead of putting your question on someone elses here. Try the Pre-Nursing Student Forum, or try a search for similiar questions. I know Ive seen this asked b4.
Good Luck..:monkeydance:

Do you have a copy of your union contract?
The hospitals policy and procedure regarding hours of work?
Maybe I read it wrong. It seems that if someone calls in sick they mandate YOU to work on short notice?
That is really dumb!
I hope it is NOT allowed.
Have you talked with your union rep? And that persons supervisor?
I could be possible but it just seems so very wrong.
I hope I'm mistaken.
