Unhappy with CSCC...are there any alternatives?

U.S.A. Ohio

I submitted my application to CSCC at 9:00 am this morning. Later today, I found out that dozens of other people had the same idea. They camped out in the computer lab and all waited to hit the 'enter' key at 9:00 am. The application was supposedly for Spring '11, but only a few people will get in due to the overwhelming number of applicants from the Fall '10 crowd. I'm fairly certain that I will not start until almost a year and a half from now. I find this frustrating, considering I have the same chance of getting in as someone who has much lower grades than mine (I have a 3.9 GPA). Are there any good alternatives to Columbus State out there?

Orientation went very well. They didn't scare us like I thought they were going to and you don't have to pay for your uniforms until you pick them up in September. They did say that they had a 23% dropout rate in the traditional program and only 3% dropout rate for the online program. It says in the handbook that if you start in the traditional program you can switch to the online or vice versa one time. Our class will be the last class to graduate while they are on the quarter system. The advisor I have recommended that you go get your MSN once you have your ADN instead of going on to do your BSN. I was going to do Chamberlain's online RN to BSN but I think I may take her advice and go to Otterbein and do their ADN to MSN.

How much are uniforms and what do they look like? The NURC 101 scrubs were awful. I guess RN-MSN makes sense if NP/CNS is you final career goal but if RN is your career goal, then RN-BSN makes sense. If I go NP, I want to do acute care, so I think I'll have to relocate to do that. I don't think there is ACNP in Columbus? My eventual goal is flight nurse, so I'll probably do RN-MSN at Case Western since they have the flight nursing subspecialty. I definitely plan to switch to the online program after my first quarter since I have a bachelors degree. I just wanted to guarantee acceptance by doing traditional instead of taking a gamble with online upfront. Any other news?

I agree, they didn't scare us too much. Sure they explained that it was a lot of work, but I was impressed with the relationship that the student reps seemed to have with the faculty. It does sound like their drop rate first quarter was a lot better with the new supplemental program. The SNA rep said that out of 120 who started with her, they have 85ish left.

I didn't get a total on my uniforms, but somewhere around $60 for 1 set. White scrub top and navy scrub pants, polo and nametag.

I didn't think they were saying that 23% dropped out of the program, they were dropping the class and having to cycle back through. I ordered 2 sets of scrubs [white top & Navy pants], 1 name-tag, 1 polo, 0 jackets =$86.00:) I was glad that I didn't have to pay for them as I'd just bought two sets for my new job.

I thought it was great, and informative. They didn't scare us too much, just emphasized the difficulty and gravity of nursing school vs. regular school. I think first quarter will scare us all by itself.

Hey guys, i'll b attending hondros school of nursing, and after my Rn, transferring over to chamberlain to get my bsn. I have only 12 credits from my previous institution before going to hondros, its almost as if im going straight out of high school. So if i want to get into the rn to bsn program at chamberlain, would there be any additional requirement? i mean i'll have my ADN from hondros when im done.

My ultimate goal is to go for crna, do you guys know of anyone that has graduated from chamberlain and got into a crna program?

thank you!!

No, you should not need additional coursework. While Hondros and Chamberlain are accredited, they have poor clinical sites and are not look as highly upon as Columbus State, OSU, Otterbein, Mt Carmel, and Capital. I would look at finishing up your RN-BSN at one of those 4-year universities. It would make your CRNA application look better and it will help you land an adult ICU job to get the experience prior to applying to CRNA school. I could have started at Hondros or Chamberlain quite a while ago, but I'm waiting longer for CSCC to make sure I receive a good quality education.

Also, some CRNA programs require organic chemistry (for pre-med which requires a year of chemistry) and physics, CCRN, shadowing of CRNAs, etc. Take a look at the programs you are interested in and start shadowing. It is a very hard and demanding 27 month graduate program.

However, I would recommend starting a new thread as you have just hijacked a thread about Columbus State's nursing program specifically.

ohh, thank you so much for the reply, and sorrryy for the hijack! lol

but i really appreciate the help. Thank you. If you think of any other universities i can try to finish my rn-bsn at, please let me know.

Ohio State, Mt Carmel, and Capital have RN-BSN. Ohio State, Capital, and Otterbein have RN-MSN. Otterbein has a CRNA program.

im curious about the application process at CSCC. i read that you turned your application at 9:00:04 lol. are you waiting to hit 'Enter' right at 9am or are you filling out the application like a crazy person with insane typing skills?? after looking at all the local options as well as out of state, getting into CSCC would be the best and if i can secure that by being fast, id love to know how you did it.

There isn't really an application. I logged in and kept hitting refresh until it let me get into the general application at 9:00:00AM. It just pops up with your Name, address, phone, cougarID and then asks if you are an LPN, rad tech, surg tech, etc but they default to "no" so you don't have to do anything. I clicked once to enter the app and clicked again to SUBMIT. No typing involved! :) It's super quick and easy. Since you log in with your CSCC username/password, the system already has your info and it won't let you get into the application if you have any prerequisites outstanding.

wow... that makes me feel a WHOLE lot better lol. i thought it was much more involved. so being one of the first ones to get it in is probably more likely than i thought. with everything thats happening, not getting into Fall 2011 would create a ridiculous amount of hurdles. you already applied right? did you get a letter yet??

They said October, but I'm hoping for September. The people that applied in January heard back mid-March.
