Unhappy with CSCC...are there any alternatives?

U.S.A. Ohio

I submitted my application to CSCC at 9:00 am this morning. Later today, I found out that dozens of other people had the same idea. They camped out in the computer lab and all waited to hit the 'enter' key at 9:00 am. The application was supposedly for Spring '11, but only a few people will get in due to the overwhelming number of applicants from the Fall '10 crowd. I'm fairly certain that I will not start until almost a year and a half from now. I find this frustrating, considering I have the same chance of getting in as someone who has much lower grades than mine (I have a 3.9 GPA). Are there any good alternatives to Columbus State out there?

i hope im wrong. i really do. i cant imagine being in your situation. i think the people who have to wait and reapply have it tough but you... lol youre in a whole new category. again, i hope im wrong and we both get in and become nurses. im just not sure how the switch is going to play out for us.

I don't care about being in class when it changes. I don't care if I have to spent a few extra months in the program because of it. I have wanted to work in trauma since I was a little kid and I'm so sick of waiting! I've been pursuing this nursing route since 2007!

Anyway... I found the nursing advisor you were talking about and I'm definitely going to do some digging and will post what I learn!

.... 2. the wait list at CSCC IS two years because they arent accepting a spring class in 2011. the school will be switching from quarters to semesters in 2012 and they dont want anyone in the program and actively taking classes while that switch is happening. so, if i apply and January, which is the plan, and dont get in, i will have to wait until the NEXT January to be accepted into the following fall. how do i know this?? because i talked with the nursing advisor less than a week ago about what i posted here and these are the suggestions and ideas that she told me....

I don't see how this is possible, for I know people starting in the spring 2011 already... Unless they are not adding more to that class? But there are a ton of people who applied in January who got a letter for spring 2011.

I just called and spoke directly with -----. She said that is not true at all. They have already filled up about half of March 2011 and the people that applied earlier this month area applying for March 2011 into September 2011. The nursing program will continue continuously despite the quarter to semester change and she said she was unsure why incorrect information was being passed on to pre-nursing students.

this is frustrating. i cant imagine why all this information is so inconsistent within the same department. i was only telling what i was told and already, within a week, ive heard contradicting stories. i talked to my NURC teacher today about all this and her response was to have a back up plan. she said dont not apply to the program but keep your options open.

as far as this ----- person is concerned, i dont know what to say to that. i plan on talking to my advisor again and telling her all of this.

... I have a meeting with a different nursing advisor on the 22nd so I'm going to ask again. It seems impossible that they would close March 2011 because I know for a fact a lot of students have already received acceptance letters and why would they hide it from students?? Seems like a cruel secret to keep. So many students think they are starting March 2011... are they ever going to notify them they were just kidding when they got that letter?

OK I spoke directly to the CSCC nursing advisor you met with and found out the deal. The July 2010 application is for the March 2011 start date. However, there might not be any additional Spring start dates because that would be in the middle of a semester which wouldn't work, obviously. So the nursing department is talking about just having one start date a year once the quarter to semester switch is complete. They aren't sure yet if that will be in January or August or maybe have both but after Spring 2011, there will be no more Spring start dates due to semesters being Jan-May.

That makes infinitely more sense that there might not be a spring class once semesters come around, but only a fall class. However when they don't clearly relay information to students this is what happens. I can only be thankful that I am getting into and out of the program before semester transition - not that I think semesters are bad, but there will be a breaking in period. :)

i understand better now. thank you for clearing it up for me. i thought this was for a class that had already been accepted and thats the part thats wasnt communicated properly. when i spoke with that person, dates were never mentioned and i guess its my fault for assuming. my mistake. however, that still means that there wont be a spring class to get into if you don't get into Fall 2011. you are likely to wait until the next fall to get into the program. unless they decide to make any other changes about the enrollment periods with the new semesters, that still leaves the same issue i brought up before about having to wait.

so if im understanding you correctly, they arent accepting a class during the switch because the timing would be off. i get that. what i dont get is whether or not this a permanent change or just a temporary one while the switch is happening. if its ongoing, then it goes from 2 enrollment periods to one. not good lol. if its temporary, then still, the people who have to apply in January for the Fall class of 2011(me) have no back up plan because there is no spring enrollment to get into. we (I) would have to wait until the Fall of 2012 to even start!

i feel like im back where i started from lol.

I wonder what is going to happen to the students that are still there that will be finishing the program in 2012. I was hoping to be graduated by the time they switch to semesters but my last quarter will be spring 2012. I like the quarter system, the classes go so much faster. The semesters will make people take longer to graduate and the classes will drag on. We were on trimesters when I went DeVry and the classes lasted 15 weeks. :(

They aren't sure if there is going to be just an August start, just a January start, or both. It is still up in the air. The latest I'll get into is Fall 2011. About half of March 2011 is still open and I applied 4 seconds after 9:00AM so they told me there is a good chance I'll start March 2011 and that my worst case scenario is September 2011. I'm SO hoping it is March though!! I would hate to be in your position... there isn't another good ADN option in Columbus. I hope CSCC keeps its twice a year start! They almost have to due to the popularity of the program... their loss if they don't!!

I think the semester change starts that fall of 2012 for the incoming class - so we should be safe!:coollook:

The thing I think will happen with the classes is that they'll be redesigned and you'll take more classes/semester. But that's just my conjecture based on discussions with my aunt who's a prof @ OSU [sociology, not nursing].

Are you starting the online or traditional? :)

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I plan to switch to the online program starting 2nd quarter... after 4 years of undergrad I'm so over going to class :)
