2012 UNF Accelerated BSN Hopefuls

Published

Hey Everyone-

I haven't seen a thread for the UNF 2012 Accelerated BSN yet so i figured I would create one. The previous classes seemed like they got a lot out of sharing with one another so hopeful we can do the same. Feel free to share any information you have, where you are in the application process or just any woes or worries. Let try to help each other along in this stressful process.

Later and good-luck,

Eric

Has anyone compared the course work from the traditional program to the accelerated program? While getting done quickly appeals to me, I wonder if the training is better in the traditional program. It seems the accelerated path has fewer clinicals so I am concerned about employability after completion of the program. Anyone have any insight about this?

Is anyone delayed in getting their N#? I submitted my app over two weeks ago and still haven't received one or email notifying me of anything...and i cannot access my application anymore either...is this strange?

what i was told there was some generic classes (like theory) that were combined with other courses and made it into one course in the accelerated. I don't think any clinicals have been eliminated. Hence less units....I don't think that matters at all, its if you pass the program and pass your licensing exam that matters.

Did you all need to report AP scores from HS?

danceluver, did you apply to the college as well as the nursing program? I applied to the college over the summer and I had my N# really quickly. My niece just applied a couple of weeks ago and after five days she didn't hear anything, so I told her to call the general admissions number and they were able to give her the N# over the phone and tell her how to log in to view her application that way. So try calling them. I think they do need the AP results directly from the college board.

Did anyone order the online practice tests from ATI for the teas V and complete them? I have been studying for about a month. I took my first practice test a couple of weeks ago and did ok but now I just took my second one (test is in 2 days) and completely bombed it after studying every day. I was wondering if the practice tests are harder than the real thing. Now I am completely freaking out!

Hey Danielle, don't worry about bombing the practice tests. I was destroyed by them and was completely discouraged but ended up getting an 87% or a 352.1. I really think the practice tests are harder. Also I would be careful with timing. I normally have NO problem finishing tests but I was completely caught off guard by 2 questions in the math section and I ended up running out of time to complete the rest. Just pace yourself, relax, and trust your gut - you will do great!

Thank you so much. It was so helpful reading this the night before my test as I am VERY anxious.

Hey there, I'm from the 2011 APL program, so I can answer that for you. While the traditional program is slower and includes more classes, many of those classes are things like socialization, nursing science, and nursing ethics. The accelerated program combines all of those into as few classes as possible, and as far as I can tell, everyone prefers it that way (nursing theory is awful). Our clinicals are actually more focused; we spend 2 semesters on med-surg floors in hospitals (thereby focusing on nursing skills), a semester on ob/peds, and we have a preceptorship the last semester. We also have a few clinicals in rehab, psych nursing, and hospice. Traditionals, on the other hand, spend most of their clinicals in nursing homes, rehab hospitals - I don't believe they get to try med-surg until much later. I mean, that stuff is very important too, but some students never get to start an IV until their last year! So I assure you that the accelerated clinicals are on the right track.

The traditional students are also bogged down with a good deal of busy work - extra papers, charts, etc. However, you might feel this is better training for you. I think the traditionals tend to do a little better in pharmacology than us, because we have so little time to learn it. Accelerated is really 'bare-bones' kind of work; they strip off anything we don't really need so that we can finish in one year. Of course this means it is really condensed, and everything you do get is very important; you can't really afford to blow off any classes (well, maybe nursing theory...). It's also terrible if you want to work, or if you have kids (the moms in our class sometimes have trouble finding childcare when our clinicals/classes run late). So whatever you think works best for you. I've noticed that everyone seems relatively satisfied in their respective programs, so hopefully you will be too.

Thank you for the information. It sounds like the program is organized well. I hope I get accepted.

Hi Eric,

How did you deside on the UNF program? I've been researching the different schools for nursing (FSCJ, UNF and JU) and find it difficult to decide. Though, I did just get off with FSCJ and that route would be 4 years. Will only be going to FSCJ for my prereq's.. Since i have a BA already, the second degree/accelerated seems to be the way to go.. Ju looks like it would be anywhere from 50k-52K for thier programs, Do you have an idea the cost of UNF?

Sorry for all the questions, my brain just hurts from trying to figure it all out. :-)

Thanks, and best of luck at UNF...

Janalle

Janalle, look at UNF's website under the College of Nursing and you will find a really good outline of their costs/fees.
