Hi all, I just submitted my UNC BSN application for the Summer 2015 program and I wanted to start this thread. I'm super anxious about waiting for the decision especially since there are so many that typically apply. Anyone else applying? Are there any current UNC students that have some insight about the program or admissions?
Thanks!!
I am a second degree student and like many other second degree students, I was placed on the waiting list for the May 2015 cohort. I have been monitoring this page for a couple days now. I think this is a fabulous resource and it gave me a boost of confidence to call the admissions office today. (Initially, I thought if I called admissions that they would think I was whining or complaining, but now I know that it is okay to call to ask questions.) I talked to the nursing school admissions counselor today and here is the information that she was able to provide me...
- Only 104 admissions letters were extended (104 is the program maximum, so they only extend the number that they can actually accommodate if everyone accepted their offer)
- Only 12-14 (sorry, I cannot remember which it was) second degree students were offered admission as they emphasize first degree students (both internal [current undergrad at UNC] and external [community college students & transfer students]) for the BSN program
- There is no rank to wait listed students (I find this hard to believe, but I also I suppose the wait list must be somewhat small if there is not a rank & they can re-evaluate the wait listed students if/when a spot becomes available)
- If someone does not accept their spot, they offer it to a wait list student from the same group (either first degree internal, first degree external, or second degree) that the initial applicant was in
- The deadline for admitted students to accept or reject is today, but the deposit deadline is not until later, so wait listed students who get offered admissions will not hear anything until after the financial deadline (I do not know the financial deadline, so maybe an admitted student could enlighten us on the wait list about when this is)
- For those on the wait list who are in NC, geography will work in your favor if there is a last minute dropout and they extend the spot to a wait listed student (i.e. it is easier for someone from NC to move to Chapel Hill at the last minute than it would be for someone from CA to do the same; at the same time, the counselor said that geography will not affect their decision [i.e. they will offer the spot to the best applicant regardless of location] if they take someone off the wait list in the next few weeks)
I hope this information helps ease your uneasiness here in wait list purgatory! -Anne
Thank you for the update/info, Anne! When I spoke with the office, they said they would mainly be pulling second degree students off the list (hope it's true). I wonder what they look at when reevaluating us. Other than one of my essays being information overload, I felt like I was a competitive applicant. I have done lots of volunteer work, undergrad research, CNA experience, and have a decent GPA, especially for being a human bio major. I'm trying my hardest to be patient and hope for the best, but it's been really hard. UNC has been my first choice and dream for a while. I would be pretty heart broken to receive a rejection.
RedtoBlue, I really hope your information about pulling from second degree students is correct instead of my information about pulling from like-pools of applicants. It seems like that way us second degree students would have a better shot! Right now, I am not hopeless but I am not hopeful either. Unfortunately, I think that getting off the wait list is an uphill battle and while I will remain on the list, I need to start preparing myself for what to do when May 13 rolls around and I still have not heard anything.
Hi All. Just joined this thread. I am a second degree student and was also wait listed for the May 2015 cohort. If anyone off the waitlist receives notification of admission, please let us all know! Also, for those of you who have contacted the SON, did they specify how waitlisted students would be notified of admission? Mail, Email? Good luck to everyone!

I was waistlisted
So some more info:
I asked more questions about the wait list and they said there is no ranking, but they do put us in categories. For example, I'm a second degree student. So if a second degree student is accepted, but denies their acceptance then second degree students who were waitlisted will then be reevaluated for admission.
