Hello everyone! I may be a little early with this, but here's a new post for all of you hoping to apply this September 2nd for the Spring 2015 semester at UMSON. You can post questions you have, helpful advice you would like to give (if you're already in the program), etc.

I specifically have a question for those who have already applied to the Spring 2014 semester and got in. When you applied last September, when in November did you get your acceptance letter in the mail? Was it the beginning, middle, or toward the end of November? I'm asking this because the other nursing school I am applying to only gives a 3-week time period after the end of October (when they let you know if you made it in or not) to accept or decline enrollment. So, if I don't make it into UMSON, I'd want to be able to give this other nursing school an answer before the 3-week time period runs out.

@lxcalibur3 Your post was awesome!!! Thank you for your insight!!

Gah! That DNP thing is news to me! Not such pleasant news either! I mean, I'll do it, regardless, but still...

And can I just say that, between this discussion and the Towson discussion, there is just the greatest bunch of people! You all are so supportive and encouraging. Everyone treats each other with respect. There's so much positivity. I know this is an incredibly stressful time for all of us, and having such great support really helps me to deal with it. Wherever I end up, I am happy to know I will have some of you all classmates. I am excited for everyone who has been accepted (or will be) and to anyone who hasn't gotten in, just keep trying. Thank you all for being you!

Phew! Lots of catching up in here to do! Just wnted to piggyback on what lxcalibur3 said about GPA. For any CNL's in this thread (I know there is a separate one, but just in case) you need to maintain a 3.0, not a 2.5. Same grading scale though.

Off to practicum. Again.

i live in howard county too!

this is what my status says does anybody have experience with this?

Have you called them yet? I would definitely do that.

Yes, I'm with katiep_123 on that. What I'm confused about is why it has two separate programs in one application. Anyway, call them tomorrow when they open in the morning and update us!

And wow, bcandygurl and amandac21, thanks again for the youtube channel suggestions. I really, really appreciate you sharing them here on the thread! I've been watching their youtube videos all day, taking notes, and Rona and Jeannette provide some pretty great tips!

What I also found today was Nurse Nacole's channel after watching Rona's video on study tips. She was also very good at explaining things, especially her video on

. I do about a fraction of her tips provided in the video already, but not much since I've always found the powerpoints for some classes to be more helpful. However, I don't doubt that we will be required to read a great amount of material from our textbooks. So this video (if anyone is interested) has been really encouraging to me, since studying from only a textbook is something I'm not too comfortable with. (This will change, though!)

It look like you have already been admitted for this fall term as the one for nursing says Fall 2014 and the other says Spring 2015. I would definitely call though.

Side note: I didn't know the school of nursing offered a medical technology program.

To be honest, I didn't read most of my textbooks. It was entirely too much reading to get through, and I wasn't finding time to actually study the material. I studied from the powerpoint slides, and anything that I didn't really understand I would go back to the textbook for more information. I REALLY paid attention during class though, and I recorded the lectures. I'm not sure if that would be the case at UMSON though I'm not sure what their teaching style is like.

Nacole had great tips in regards to how to read the textbooks. I used a similar style. Those boxes and chapter reviews are important.

So, to add to what bcandygurl was saying... yea, I tried the textbook reading in the beginning in my first semester but stopped doing that after a while, because most (99%) of the questions are from lectures, powerpoints... and what professors said during lecture. Good thing about UMSON, if the class is really important like Fundamentals, Med/Surg (aka Adult Health), Assessment, the lectures are all recorded, so you can look at the recorded lectures how many ever times you would like. The recorded lectures are posted on Blackboard in about 24-48 hours of the lecture, well actually usually within several hours, if there isn't any IT issues.

So, here's my tip.

When I was mostly studying from the textbook, I was getting high C's and low B's on the exam. Then, one day I realized I need to try a different approach.

I started listening to recorded lectures and took very good notes and then I studied the notes.... After I understood the notes/materials, I watched the recorded lecture once more and it helped me a bunch because by then, I was getting much higher grades on exams. The excellent thing about recorded lectures are that you can stop the lecture at any time you want to, go back to the part where you haven't understood and re-listen to it and take notes on your pace. Personally, I rarely went to class because I knew that I barely pay attention in class :whistling:... And many professors talk very fast, so I wouldn't get all the notes anyways. So, I either stayed home or went to the library and studied with the recorded lectures, instead.

For the first and second semesters, I actually purchased or rented textbooks. For the third and fourth semesters, I didn't buy anything and I am still surviving and doing well.

You rarely need to use the textbook... unless the professor says specifically "you must read page 156!!!."... Then it's a given if you know what I mean... But even then, if you need the book, you can always head to the school library to rent the book (only bummer is that you can't rent it out... you can only have that book within the library facility itself). But I tell you, I haven't looked at textbooks in forever. Purchasing or renting, I don't have that kind of money as a student, so I saved money by discovering what's the best way to study.

Now, this method might not work for everyone, but it's one of the methods you can try because in Nursing School, I changed my studying method several times. Here's how it changed: index cards -> textbook -> writing notes in looseleaf -> writing notes (from lecture) directly on Powerpoint and studying from those notes. Well, for me, "writing notes directly on Powerpoint, studying from those notes, and finally, re-listening to the lecture once more" worked the best for me.

It's all about finding what works best for you, and it may certainly take time for you to figure out.

bcandygurl that's entirely the way I study now, since to me looking through the textbook just seems too much. I am wondering the same about UMSON students and their textbook-studying situation...

lxcalibur3 and smoup, what is the teaching style? Do you find the program is more textbook-heavy (as in, do the professors rely on the textbook) or powerpoint-heavy? Also, what did you guys do about buying textbooks? Or did you rent? Have any tips on how to study? I'm curious! (I'm sure others here are as well...!

!!!

lxcalibur3 you posted RIGHT BEFORE I posted haha! Time to read...
