Hello all, I am planning to apply to UMSON in the fall 2016. I haven't seen a thread yet for other hopefuls and potential candidates. So I wanted to start one.
What is your definition of a top candidate?
In my opinion, almost perfect GPA and high score on the teastest plus nice recommendation letter ! this is my guess. People told me that since most universitiesmade decisions already and notify their students about it, there is apossibility that top candidates†who applied elsewhere may accept theiroffers. So, if UMD admission thinks that it would be waste of time while givingadmission offer to these students, there might be a possibility that topcandidates†might not get in! I am not sure how much it is true though!

No offense but that doesn't make any sense. How would they know who has accepted offers elsewhere or not?
I don't think the admissions committee would not give offers to top candidates if they were admitted to other schools because there's still a possibility of the candidate accepting their offer (over the other schools)... and I feel like that's against some type of policy or regulation to deny someone an open seat just because they got into other schools. Also, I would think that schools informing other schools if someone got in is kind of a breach of confidentiality, but then again, I'm not entirely sure how the process goes so I'm just basing this on opinion. Grey Lady can probably provide more accurate insight.

Trust me, the admissions office is not doing this to you on purpose. The decision-making process was changed to involve more collaboration with faculty, the entire student services department, which includes admissions, has been without a director for months, and two very key, high level staff left their jobs right in the middle of the admissions process. It's been a kind of perfect storm. I promise you that the admissions staff would DEARLY have liked to have been done last month. I think you may have seen on this thread that they are working on weekends to try and get caught up. We know very well that the longer this takes, the more likely we are going to lose out on some top candidates who accept other offers. Whether final status changes for all current Committee Ready applicants will be done today is something I have no way of knowing but I can assure you that a mighty effort to accomplish that is underway. May it come to fruition.
