I will be applying for the Fall 2011 program at UMB really really soon. I was wondering if anyone else was doing the same...? I'm really nervous about applying because Anatomy really kicked my butt last semester and I ended up getting a C (even though I ended up doing really well on my other science courses). Now, I'm losing hope. Anyone feeling the same?
so I was scouring the boards from previous application cycles and just realized that for spring of 09 some people found out they got in as early as sept 19th! (and their deadline was sept 1st). I can't believe some of them heard back so early. I think student 4 life is right though and maybe next week people will start to hear back.
I hope I am right, UMB goes on Spring Break the week after next
So if I am wrong we will have at least 3 more weeks of wonder.
Hi, folks,
I know you are not going to like this but please don't expect to hear anything before the first two weeks of April. The entire pool of applicants will be thoroughly reviewed before any decisions will be made and that process is still ongoing. As hard as it is, you will do yourself a favor if you can just let it go and try hard to not think about it. As long as your status is Complete and Ready for Review there really is not anything else you can do at this point. Best of luck.
That having been said, in the event you are not admitted (and, of course, I am rooting for all of you) there are some things you can do to make yourself a more attractive candidate for reapplication for spring. Healthcare experience matters a lot. If you do not already have it, can you set yourself up to get some, volunteer or paid, from now through the summer? (Actually that is advice I would give to students who are admitted for fall.) Can you retake a science course you got a C in and get an A by the spring deadline of September 1? If your TOEFL score is marginal can you immerse yourself in English, take it again and bring the score way up? Could you re-write your essay to make a better case to the admissions committee about why they should choose you even if your academic record has some blemishes?
Finally, if you really want to be a nurse and do not end up at UMB, there are other nursing schools and I hope you find one. Here's hoping you find a way to be the nurse you want to become.
Hi! Does anyone know when the traditional BSN program would start in the fall, and do UMB and Shady Grove campuses have the same start dates? Also orientation dates? I can't seem to find them on the site....Thanks! :)
The program is the same for both Shady Grove and Baltimore campuses and so the start dates are the same as are the breaks. The Academic Calendar for 2011-2012 is not yet up on the website but classes start the last Monday in August and Orientation is usually two weeks before for Shady Grove and one week before for Baltimore - dates are not yet available. Both will be for two whole days and you need to attend both days. You do not want to miss Orientation - you will feel so out of it and stressed if you do. But if you absolutely cannot attend the one for your campus, you should tell the admissions office that you want to attend the other.
Hi Grey Lady; thanks for the info! Are you at the Shady Grove campus (and do you like it)? Another random question, when do you start doing IVs? I work in a dental clinic and the periodontist has let me do one, but he basically guided me with his hands on mine so I only did it half myself. I started pulling the needle out before I put the catheter in all the way (but luckily he caught it). This is my biggest fear about nursing school...doing IVs! I practice on an orange a lot but I am always afraid that I will either go out the underside of the vein or not go deep enough. Even googled how to do it and watched a few videos as well; thought about trying on myself but I hate needles! :I Random tangent I know, but any tips? :) It is awesome that you on this site to guide all of us hopefuls! :)
So, I'm not going to lie, I am a bit bummed about being wrong on the turn around time for applications. But in reality to hear back in the first two weeks of April puts the turn around at 9 weeks which is lighting fast compared to typical college notification times.
That aside I attended the Open House at Shady Grove today (mainly to learn about the scholarships offered by USG) and was really impressed by all the services and facilities on the campus. There is all sorts of counciling and advising, from scholarships to study motivation, to internship preparation. There is a decent sized gym with modern equipment (although the hours are a bit restrictive, just a bit better then bankers hours), lots of quiet study areas both inside and out, and a small bookstore (snagged a UMB coffee cup to keep me focused these last few weeks).
All in all I liked SG alot more than the Baltimore campus, but I am biased...
PS
For those of you that also applied to SG there are 23 SG specific scholarships (both merit and need based and range from 200-full tuition+) you fill out one app available on the website (and not due until the end of June so no rush) and you will be considered for all scholarships you qualify for.
That's about all I got, see you in a month.

I am at the Shady Grove campus and absolutely love it here. But I am not a student. You have lots to learn before you get into IVs and I don't think that happens until way late. By the time they come around you will be confident. Baby steps.
Continued from above...
Anyone (Grey Lady) know how competitive is the Acute Care NP program and/or the "stats" of all the applicants? I worked on a busy cardiac floor in New York City for almost 2 years, but it wasn't ICU or ED. Although working in critical care isn't a requirement for this program, do you think that will be a disadvantage?
Thanks for all your input. I just discovered this thread and have read all 11 pages...
