UMASS Boston RN-BSN Online update

Published

I just found out that I passed the pharmacology NLN exam. Next week I take the NLN nutrition exam. I hope to pass that exam so I wont have to take a nutrition class. The pharm exam was not hard at all in my opinion. I studied from my nursing school pharm book and took the test. I am more worried about the nutrition exam. The nursing class starts 4 Sept. I will let you know how it goes!

yes you need 6 credits from language or culture to graduate with the BSN

Well I am almost finished the second semester. Things are going pretty well. I am taking Health Assessments and stats for health care professionals. The stats class is horrible! The instructor is very nice, but I just don't understand much past the median and mean. Its like a totally different language!

For those who are looking into this program my advice is to finish ALL of your gen ed stuff (language, humanities, etc) so you only have to take the nursing courses. I am taking Spanish I and II this summer and the price is pretty high compared to what a community college charges. Massasoit charges $330.00 for one language class, while UMass charges close to $1200.00. I have petitioned UMass to allow me to take the classes at Massasoit, but have yet to get a reply. Although the nursing portion of school is not at all challenging to this point, it still consumes way to much time!!!! For those who are thinking about getting an MSN, skip the BSN part if possible and finish it in one shot. School is just so horribly expensive these days!

Will keep ya posted

Thank you, Gerry.

I have BS and MS in chemistry and have been thinking about getting BSN or MSN. Both require so much time and so many courses in nursing theories. I work in the operating room but would love to do research related to gerontology. However, I don't want to work in long term care until conditions improve in that enviroment.

Thank you for keeping us updated.

Nabi:

What specifically did you mean by your observation about conditions in long term care? What was it like working in that setting?

Thanks!

Erica,

I did not observe the conditions as a student nurse. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I go to the LTC discussion board and it seems that many nurses are not happy at LTC. In addition, I know some nurses who worked at LTC had told me that the nurse patient ratio was like 1: 30 or something in that ballpark. Hopefully, it's better now. Feel free to correct me.

Thanks.

I've been looking at online RN-BSN programs and the UMASS course looks like the winner as I'm an hour from the Boston campus and I'd love to attend one of the "Information Sessions" they hold.

For those of you who have taken or are currently taking the course; are long distance students at UMB assigned a school email address and are they also invited to participate in the graduation as a traditional student?

Hi Everyone,

I am also very interested in this program. How is the application process. Do you have to apply with the "undergraduate application" first. With an essay? Actually any info you have would be helpful. Thanks!

application process is very straight forward, no essay required. I think you have to have 2.8 and above gpa. This all can be done online.

Ok cool, I applied on-line and sent my transcripts from RN school. Did you go to the info session and if you did how was it?

I went to the info session last night, seems like a great way to get my BSN. I do have a couple questions for those that are in it or have completed it. Regarding pre-reqs, what clases did you take for the Art, World Culture, Humanities requirement? Is it best just to take Spanish and Spanish 2? Is Intro to Stats OK? And how was the nutrition and pharm tests?

Thanks for any info!
