UMass Boston Accelerated BSN 2009

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

I'm in the process of applying to UMass Boston's Accelerated BSN program that will start in Summer of 2009. I'm wondering if anyone has any information about the program. Has anyone applied? Has anyone been accepted or heard back?

Also I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the housing situation. I've done some research and they said they were going to build residence halls to make the University more appealing to students who don't live in the area. Does anyone know if they have started the project or when they are going to start it?

I look forward to getting a response! :nuke:

The class and clinical schedule is rotating, so it's really impossible to work. I'm really lucky to have a helpful husband - and amazing in-laws that pick up and drop off my daughter from preschool for me. For instance, my schedule this semester is that I have Monday and Tuesday off, but clinical Wednesday from 7-1:30, Clinical Thursday from 7AM to 7PM and class all day (from 10AM to 5PM) on Friday. Next semester (Winter session) is all day, every day. Who knows what spring will bring?!?!

As far as classes, it's basics for the first summer - you spend all your time in class and in the lab. Don't get comfortable - it's easy for the first semester. Fall is a butt-kicker. You have med-surg, mental health, pathophysiology & pharmacology (online).

It's not that the work is all that hard, (it's difficult but not impossible) it's that you're expected to do it simultaneously. With traditional programs, you would have Med-surg by itself with a 3 credit in class course. You'd never have more than one clinical at a time. In the accelerated program - you have nothing but two clinicals at once. So it's a constant barrage: one test after another, one paper after another, one assignment after another - no breaks, no rest, no time between. The other thing that is kind of sucky is that you never find out what your exact schedule will be until about a week before classes are supposed to start. This is because of difficulties with clinical sites, etc. So really - you can't plan for child care. You just have to suck it up and hope you have enough people that will help you out.

This program is new, so you'd probably be able to get in without too much effort - but beware, they're still working out the kinks! If you really just want to get licensed and get it over with, and you're willing to deal with a little red tape and miscommunication, then this program is for you. However, if you like to have things be 'just so' or if you have a hard time when things are ambiguous, I'd look elsewhere. I really hope this helped for you! And good luck.

Hi again~ Could you please share with us your 'winter schedule', when you say 5 days a week, all day, do you mean 7 to 5? Was everyday the same schedule? REALLY curious about the scheduling aspect.....thanks again for your willingnes to share with prospective students. Pinkemme

Hello All!

According to the tenative schedule posted on the college of nursing and health sciences website, notification of finalists will be approximately the last week of February! (Almost there..thank god!) I'm dying to find out whether or not I'll get to interview! *crossing my fingers*

Has anyone heard anything about the program/application process/decision? Is anyone else as anxious as me? I think I'm driving myself crazy!

hi

Where are the names of the finalist posted? do you have the name of the website? If so, could you please post!!! Thanks!

pinkemme,

You may have misunderstood my last post. I meant that according to the website, decisions regarding the finalists will be made around the last week of February. So there is no website where they post the names of finalists. You can check the status of your application by going to the following website

https://www.umassadmin.net/isis/checkstatus/login.asp?inst=umbos&career=ugrd

Let me know if you have any questions...I don't know much but I might be able to help you out!

biok8e-

In an early post, you suggested being a pain in the ass to get an interview. What did you do in addition to submitting a great application to increase your chances of an interview?

I plan to apply to the program next year.

Hi there to all the fellow applicants. I also applied to UMB for 2009, accelerated BSN. Let's hope to hear from them soon. I submitted my application since October of 2008, also graduated from UMB, so I'm an alumni and the process was different and honestly more complicated ughh. Anyhow, let's hope to hear from them soon :-)

The only thing I did was to call . I emailed her a bunch, too. I was a UMB alum, too - maybe that helped! Who knows - I can give you all a little update on what I've heard about the program for the next cohort:

First, they're using our input for you guys, so hopefully you don't have to deal with some of the same garbage we did. For example, they've already got clinical sites and times set in stone for you.

Secondly, they have about double the number of applicants this time around.

That's all I can think of right now. Good luck to all of you!

:)

Thanks for your reply Biok8e, I hope being a UMB alum will give me some sort of advantage he he. When do you graduate by the way? Also where do most clinical sites take place? Which hospitals I mean?

Schedule wise are they any flexible? Sorry if I am boring you with questions :-)

Thanks again

biok8e,

In regards to being a pain in the butt, who did you email a bunch? Can you give me her name and email address? Also you heard there are twice as many applicants this year?! :uhoh3: OH MY! Does that mean they might increase the number of people they accept?? (I sure hope so!)

Thanks,

Hi

When did you get your letter? I called today and the coordinator said that they haven't gone out yet??? Are you talking about the 2010 cohort?
