Umass amherst absn 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone! I noticed that there are currently no posts regarding the UMass Amherst ABSN program for the 2019 cycle so I figured I would start one. I am in the middle of completing my application and would like to connect with other applicants, as well as previously accepted students that might me able to give some advice about the program. I am currently worried about my lack of experience because I have only held volunteer positions, but the admission criteria doesn't mention experience as a requirement. Thanks!

Hi-

I'm currently in the fall 2018 start cohort. I can give you a little background on my experience and education- hopefully it can help in some way. From my understanding they care the most about your essay, recommendation letter and prerequisite gpa. I had a 3.9 GPA for the required prerequisite courses. I graduated from my first bachelors in sociology (3.0 for undergrad) and went on to social work, where I worked within elementary school based social work.

Don't sweat not having experience- many in my class (including me) do not have experience but may have other personal or volunteer capabilities within the medical or other caring fields. I'd recommend to concentrate on showing your interest/experiences and what you would bring to nursing. UMass very much value diversity (age, ethnicity, gender, etc) and having people who embody/demonstrate their nursing values.

hi, has anyone else applied to this cycle? it seems pretty quiet on here, unless there is another thread??

I applied to this cycle. I am waiting on march 1st?to get a decision

I also applied to this cycle and am anxiously awaiting to hear back in March! I am surprised at how few people responded this year since there were so many people discussing this last year. I personally also do not have any nursing related experience, but I do have a lot of human services experience. I’m hoping for the best!

I applied also.. I don't really have any related experience either. I am an EMT but unfortunately that job didn't start until very recently so I couldn't use it on my resume yet. I have good grades for prereqs which I recently took but my undergrad gpa is just barely above 3.0 so we will see.. good luck!

Hi people, I know there’s not a lot of responses but I would definitely like to keep this going so when letters do come in we can discuss together. For now, if people don’t mind posting a little bit about themselves.. I’m here for it. I am a health science major, I applied with a 3.6 prerequisite gpa which is not great but it’s sufficient, I feel. My experience is good but I’m gaining more as we speak! Do people know if biostatistics would’ve counted for their intro to statistics requirement?

Agreed!

I have a BS in Psychology, my pre-requisite GPA was a 4.0. I have worked various jobs in the human services field since graduation but am currently working in a psychiatric hospital where I work alongside nurses daily.

As for biostatistics, I’m not sure about whether that would be accepted as the stats pre-requisite but there is an e-mail listed on the program website where you can ask. I used it myself and they responded within a day with the answer. ?

Hello!

I also applied for this summer and also surprised more people haven't commented on this thread. My volunteer experience was mainly through my sorority, but I am a certified nursing assistant with few clinical experience. Hoping for the days to go by faster!!

Hey Everyone!

I also applied to this program and cannot wait until we hear back from the school in a month and a half. I live in Seattle and have roughly 3.5 years of work experience as a CNA in an oncology clinic and the university hospital emergency department. My undergrad degree is in Gender and Diversity studies with a focus in healthcare accessibility and I look forward to working in emergency medicine and later community health.

Hey guys, just got an email...I got in! To say it was a shock is an understatement, I was expecting to not hear for at least 2-3 weeks. Good luck to everyone, I'm excited to get started and meet everyone!
