Is any ED teaching their nurses Ultrasound guided peripheral IV placement? Thanks Bob

*** In my hospital the RRT RNs and certain ICU nurses have that skill. For some reason we don't train anyone to do it officialy. Those that can place ultrasound guided PIVs are those who came to us with that skill. I have trained a few of the ICU nurses but none of our ER nurses were interested in learning. They just call RRT RN down to place them when needed. Same for IO.

Our educator in the ED has talked about training the RNs in US IV starts, but it has not happened yet. We always have a resident around who will start an IV/central line if needed. All of our ER nurses are trained to start IOs. RRT only comes to the ER to drop off a new pt (for example, a visitor who passed out in the hall).

What?? I'm a nursing student hoping for an ED new grad residency...I would love to learn how to do an IO or an US guided IV! Would be a wonderful skill to learn! I'll be looking into classes to learn how to do them just so I can benefit the patients I come into contact with! I hope they begin to offer more classes for IO and US guided PIVs.

You dont need classes for them really. The IO gun is easy, point and shoot. US IV is just an IV with a twist.

You can learn everything you need to know about the IO in like 15 min. US PIVS also has little to learn but practice in understanding what you are seeing on the screen is very helpful.

It'd be nice if we could take these little in-service classes while in school. They only do teaching for nurses once a year.

Yes I learned IO in ACLS. I was shocked at the size of the needle but it is like a camera haha great analogy! Lol still laughing
