UK Nurse wanting to work in US

Published

Hi,

I am currently living in the UK and have a RN Diploma with 3 yrs experience. Me and my husband have always wanted to work and live in the US, but I am really unsure how the nursing part goes. I know that as a foreign nurse, i have to take a NCLEX exam, which i've already got the book for. I was wondering whether there are any other nurses in the same situation, or other nurses that have taken the plunge!

really appreciate any response you can give me as we are really serious about it.

Hi Welcome to allnurses!

I am one of those ones who took the plunge...I live on the east caost of Florida and have done for almost 18 months (wow where did that time go??!!LOL) it took us 37 months from start to finish to get here and very stressful. Initially when we got here it was stressful but my 2 boys settled within days. It took me & Hubby a few months to get to that stage and now that we are we love our life style and dont ever envisage going back....:monkeydance:

18 months already? Time really does fly.....remember when you were just starting the process.

Definitely check out the Primer at the top of this forum. Will also depend on if you have enough hours in all of the required hours. The US requires that you be a generalist in order to write the NCLEX-RN exam.

And you must have approval of a state Board of Nursing to be able to even sit for the exam. Please do some reading here and then let us know if you have any more questions.

And welcome to Allnurses.com.............:balloons:

I know it may seem like a stupid question, but i have no idea where to start. I already have accomodation in the US, it's just knowing where to start. My house is in Florida so do i contact the Florida board of nursing first, or do i contact the NMC here. Argghhh!!

welcome

go to your university...... or send a carrier pidgeon :)

and ask for a transcript of your training, it will tell you if you have enough hours in the childrens/mental health/maternity areas to sit the exam, the more clinical and theory hours you have in these areas the better.

You may have to pay for your transcript but at least you will know from the start without having to wait for the florida board to look at them for you.

good luck

you could do both but would suggest contacting Florida first and start your application then when they get a copy from NMC they will have an idea what to do with it.

Florida actually requires the CES, suggest that you start with that, they will not even look at your application without it. Flroida does not do their own credentials evaluation. Thne you will know how many hours that you do have, or that you will need to make up.

Just looking at your transcript will not give you all of the information necessarily, it is also dependent on how your school credits the hours. You are required to have a certain amount in theory, as well as clinical.

As the others have said you need to get a transcript from your university and get CES under way. also as Suzanne says you need to read the stickies up top from here as it will give you the info you need to get started and if you have any questions from there then fire away!!;)

BTW where is your accomodation in Florida?

i have a house in kissimmee which we rent out to tourists. its beautiful
