UK Nurse wanting to work in US

Published

Hi,

I am currently living in the UK and have a RN Diploma with 3 yrs experience. Me and my husband have always wanted to work and live in the US, but I am really unsure how the nursing part goes. I know that as a foreign nurse, i have to take a NCLEX exam, which i've already got the book for. I was wondering whether there are any other nurses in the same situation, or other nurses that have taken the plunge!

really appreciate any response you can give me as we are really serious about it.

Hi!

I feel your pain. i am just starting the whole process and find it fairly overwhelming. At this point, I find it hard to beileve I will ever make it! BUT others obviously do(as seen on this site!)and that gives me hope and it should give you hope also. It does seem like the whole process of licensure is made as confusing and as complicated as possible :uhoh21: !

I too am moving to Florida. My husband is US navy and we just had 3 years in England before coming back to the states. In San Diego right now but move in a few weeks!!! We will be in Jacksonville, Fl.

I am only just starting the ball rolling so we are kind of at the same point. From what I can gather, you need to apply for the CES from an agency that specialises in checking transcripts of education and the florida nuring board has a list of these:

Below is the link to the handbook from the CGFNS which explains the CES process:

Hope this helps! Feel free to PM me, if you want to share frustrations and progress!!

Always recommend the CES, as it is accepted all over the country, in cases that you would ever move again.

Also be aware that depending on when you graduated and what your area of specialty was, you may need to complete some additional courseworl before you will be permitted to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.

Florida on a vacation and Florida in the life of a working RN are two very, very different worlds!!!

Welcome to the land of unsafe staffing, overloaded assignments with first admit to match. Do yourself a favour. Rent out the FL house and apply for a California license. At least there is safe staffing, and nurses are paid better. Did I mention that the Florida RN pay is crap?

Nurses are treated like dirt in Florida. Lots of passive aggressive behaviour and mind games. RUN RUN RUN while you can!!

I'm going to the West Coast.

Florida is good for a Disney vacation, not for a working nurse.

Just my 2 cents on the matter. You will remember my words if you don't believe me now.

Good luck.

Yes Florida on vacation IS different to working....

I have to say though I am happy where I work - our staffing ratio is fine and the staff get treated reasonably well - I have no complaints - so I guess you have to look carefully...i agree though the pay could be better....
