Hi folks,
Thinking about applying to UIC's GEP program. Anybody here applied and was accepted? What were your stats?
My stats: 3.2 Overall GPA/3.5 Sci BA in Sociology. Office Manager in home health care, tech in a medical equipment co, medical assistant (no cert) in dr's office and later office manager there. Volunteering in Nursing Home around 120 hours...
From what I can tell on their website, after completing the NCLEX, you immediately start the master portion of the program. Is this correct?
@rainkissed
of course not! lol no I'm not, i grew up by UIC and live there now but I went away for my undergrad to the University of Connecticut because I got recruited to play ice hockey there (there are no Division I schools in Illinois, most on the east coast). I graduated in May 2012 with a major in physiology and neurobiology. I wanted to come back home to Chicago for grad school so I got a job as a research specialist at UIC for this year just to take a little time off from school/get more research experience. I would have done nursing at UConn but you aren't allowed into the school if you play a D1 sport bc of the time commitment and scheduling of clinicals, also the program was another 2 years long and I didn't want to stay out in Connecticut for that long. I'm a city girl! lol
but my family has been in the Little Italy/UIC area since my grandparents came over from Italy like 70 years ago. So if you have any questions about the area or the city, I should be able to help!
Hey all - I withdrew my app to UIC after too many hiccups and an acceptance elsewhere, but I currently volunteer at their hospital in the NICU and live in Pilsen, the neighborhood just to the south of campus, so I'm happy to answer any questions about volunteering or my neighborhood as well! I'm still reading this thread out of habit And if anyone is looking to move to Chicago in August instead of December, I've got a great little apartment you will love - for CHEAP!
@rain - that's awesome you have a similar major, I loved it! I also got a minor in neuroscience which in incorporated psych along with neuro which was my favorite.
As far as my research, we mostly deal with stroke prevention. My boss invented this camera that allows us to examine the blood vessels in the eye. It takes videos of the blood flow in eye so we can calculate blood flow velocity, measure the thickness of the vessels...and so on. The blood flow into the eyes is a great indicator of the blood supply into the brain (which i'm sure you know!). Right now we are looking at the difference in blood flow between normal patients and patients who have had a stroke. As you know, strokes occur because of either a blockage of blood into the brain (ischemic) or burst of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic). Either way it's a blood disorder! So the ultimate goal is to see if we notice a difference in the blood flow rates of normal v. stroke patients. If there is, then hopefully we can use the camera to help prevent strokes on patients who are at risk for strokes. Hope that makes sense!

And geez, yeah the weather is totally brutal right now. I think the windchill was 0 this morning and literally a year ago today it was in the 80's.
