UI Chicago GEP Spring 2012

Published

Anyone planning to apply to UIC's GEP for winter/spring 2012? (http://www.uic.edu/nursing/prospectivestudents/gep-about.shtml) The application opened on January 15 and is due March 1.

I just finished the primary application and am waiting to receive the secondary application to send out recommendation requests. Their application cycle is a bit odd and inconvenient, since most other places that start in the fall require deposits by late March into early April, and UIC doesn't inform you of your status until late April. But in the end, it's still a great program and worth a shot.

Thanks everyone!! I will look into Dr. Collins at Malcolm X for next semester. The schedule out now doesn't list who will be teaching what section yet so that makes it a bit tough.:( I like the convenience of location (right off the 290) and parking at Malcolm X vs no parking at Harold Washington.

RMWC, thanks for letting me know of Dr. Diamond's lectures online. I will look into them. May I ask the name of the professor you are currently taking? Is it also Dr. Collins?

Wishing everyone a pleasant Easter weekend and great news on Monday morning! :)

Thank you, everyone, for letting me know I'm not the only one who had an interview with someone who hadn't read their app!! I know my interviewer hadn't read my application because she seemed genuinely shocked/impressed when I mentioned one of my academic/research experiences, and there were some definite questions she would have if she had. But, all that being said, it was an absolutely wonderful experience. We had a fantastic, engaging conversation and I was shocked when the interview was over. Like, "That's it? Don't you want to know about X? Or Y? *facepalm* I don't think I made a very good last impression. :)

The most important thing for me, though, is I was very concerned about the Master's portion being so online, and my interviewer had had similar reservations. Since she's a PMH faculty member she was able to explain how she helped mitigate that (in my opinion) disadvantage of the program. I know, for me, I had been strongly considering making UCSF my first choice (even though I'd have to wait longer to start their program) just because it's all in-person. But my interview set my mind at ease about the online PMH program. :)

Sofenny - Yep! That's the Abidemi I know! He has so many siblings, so I'm not surprised. If you see him, you can let him know you're applying to the same program as Sonia from IMSA, he knows me.

As for Malcolm X- I will be taking 226 (part 1) this summer and 227 (part 2) this fall. I didn't check the fall catalog, but the professor scheduled to teach the night session this summer got the highest possible rating on ratemyprofesser.com, so I'm looking forward to the experience. I don't recall his name off hand, but it wasn't a name you guys mentioned in this thread. I really like the Malcolm X location because it is so convenient, close to the highway and downtown, yet for those of us with cars there is ample free parking.

In the meantime, I'm going through a medical terminology book on my own because I've been told it helps with a&p as well as the intensive 15 month program. If anyone is interested, I went through thread after thread on this forum and decided after reading nursing faculty and student opinion to go with this book.

I am registering for summer a&p I too and have been trying to decide between Harold Washington and Malcolm X. Malcolm X would be alot closer to work, but I've heard Harold Washington is a better location. Would anyone mind sharing their background info? (work experience, clinical experience, gps, gre, pre-reqs, etc) I'm going to apply to the program next year, but know it's really competitive. I have a healthcare background (non clinical). I graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign in 2009 with a degree in healthcare administration and planning. I'm finishing pre-reqs and working full time at UIC now. I'm also in the process of starting to volunteer. I haven't taken the gre yet, so that's something I'll have to get done this fall. I really want to find out how to make myself a competitive applicant. Any advice would be great!

Yes, I felt the same way at the end of my interview that I got so scared, I felt like it was too short, I didn't get to say things I wanted to say, there were questions I was expecting to be asked so I can talk about things in my application, and it just ended, I was tempted to say something else I really wanted to tell her about me but she said that was it, and I wasn't sure if it would be a smart idea to continue. If I'm not chosen, I will atleast know that I went for what I wanted and I won't stop going after it. But I'm still hoping to see you again in class.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!! I hope we all get some fantastic news!! :)

Yes! Good luck to everyone! I'm so glad the waiting will finally be over!
