Anyone planning to apply to UIC's GEP for winter/spring 2012? (http://www.uic.edu/nursing/prospectivestudents/gep-about.shtml) The application opened on January 15 and is due March 1.
I just finished the primary application and am waiting to receive the secondary application to send out recommendation requests. Their application cycle is a bit odd and inconvenient, since most other places that start in the fall require deposits by late March into early April, and UIC doesn't inform you of your status until late April. But in the end, it's still a great program and worth a shot.
I'm currently taking Physiology at Triton College (the A&P are two different classes for one semester each). I currently have Dr. Samaan and love her! She holds a PhD in neurological sciences and is an amazing teacher with TONS of info. It also helps that she currently works at UIC conducting neurological research and has been very helpful through this application process. I would highly recommend her.
I am taking my classes at Harold Washington College. I've heard a lot of people complain about Malcolm X. I've liked my A&P classes there so far (I'm taking the second half right now). My current teacher (Prof. Asadi) does oncolgy research at UIC and has a doctorate (and I think did post doctorate work) in immunology.
I see we have some new folks on here. Did any of you interview for the adult/geriatric track? So far I've been the only one on this thread who did. Would love to hear from you!!
Thanks for the input rachel. I would have to take evening or weekend classes so I will look at the schedule and see what's available. I interviewed for Acute Care...I met a girl for adult/geriatric the day of my interview. Very nice girl but I can't remember her name. She seemed pleased with her interview.
RMWC,
Welcome! Your interview sounds like it was similar to mine. She had questions about A LOT of little details my essays, and some things in my recommendation letters. She had definitely taken a thorough read through my app before my interview.
What specialty did you interview for?
Among newcomers, any Administrative Studies applicants? I'd love to know!
Hi Promise, at Malcolm X college, Dr Collins is very good I had her for anatomy and Physiology 2, she will make you understand what you are learning, she gives a pop quiz every morning at the beginning of class so you know you have to study the material before you get to class, and she is so very understanding. She is a retired medical doctor and you will know she knows what she is teaching

I interviewed for the Adult-Geriatric specialty.
As for A&P at Malcolm X, A&P I requires a little extra effort on your own to learn all the material due to the style of teaching and quality of students. If you feel you need a little extra help, Cal-Berkley has posted all the class lectures for Dr. Diamond on Youtube and iTunes-U. She does an excellent job of covering the essentials. The professor for A&P II at Malcolm X is a lot better. I've really enjoyed her class a lot more than A&P I. I'm sure you'll find some hits and misses at the other campuses, although based on my limited experiences, Wright College tends to have some better professors. You really can't beat the low credit costs for Chicago City Colleges.
I'm taking A&P I right now at Oakton in Skokie with Dr. Perry, and have been happy with it. Her reviews on ratemyprofessor are less than favorable, but I don't find her to be unreasonable in the least. She has very high expectations of her students, but I guess that's what I was expecting going into it! I have also heard good things about Prof Arfeen (I think that's his name).

My interviewer also was familiar with my application. In fact, she had it with her and addressed parts of my essays she had highlighted. I also think that the our applications had to be reviewed for interview selection. I know there are several interviewers for each specialty and I think you are paired up with one that can relate most to your background...at least that was my impression for my interview. The question about a strong support system did come out in my interview as well due to many students feeling a drastic amount of stress during the transition after the 15 month time point. I don't want to think about the interview anymore. Good luck to everyone!!! I hope everyone gets into their desired specialties!!!
On another note, (thinking positively), is anyone else taking Anatomy and Physiology? I am currently taking the first half and am a bit disappointed with the course and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to where to enroll for the second half. I am currently enrolled in BIOS 226 at Malcolm X College. Thanks in advance!!
