Hello future nursing students!
I didn't see a forum for those of us applying to the University of Houston - Sugar Land nursing program in the Spring of 2020, so I decided to start one. I have already submitted my application and completed my CPR certification, so now there's just the waiting. I've attached all the resources from the UH website that I could find, just for everyone's convenience.
I do have a few questions though: is anyone else having issues submitting the SSN release form? I get an error message every time I try, and I haven't heard back from the school about it yet (I emailed them asking if it had been received). Are y'all applying to other accelerated programs? If so- could you share which ones?
I was also wondering what kind of stats everyone who's applying has, or if anyone has any info about past applicants/students and the scores/extracurriculars that they had before acceptance. If anyone would be willing to share that info, it would be super appreciated!
Good luck to everyone!
~Ari

Hi everyone,
I Graduated from Texas A&M University with a 3.55 overall, I have my BLS/CPR certification, and I have been a chiropractic assistant as well as a home healthcare caretaker for an elderly woman. I got an 86 on my TEAS. I am hoping that this will be enough to get an interview! I feel like my stats are extremely average.
I've heard that they do look at candidates as a whole. In the informational sessions I've been to, many of the people had mixed backgrounds that weren't necessarily in any medical or even a scientific field. I've also heard that there's a large variety of GPAs that are accepted too.
I'm so anxious to hear back, but I'm trying not to fret about it. Is anyone going to the upcoming informational session?

When does the application cycle close for you guys? If I’m not mistaken, we were called for an interview about 3-4 weeks after the application closed.

Part of this document states that applicants must submit "evidence of compliance" prior to the program application deadline. Are the CON Clinical Requirements such as Immunizations, CPR certification, etc. required before the application deadline??
Thank you so much for responding to this thread!!
Hey There Futurenurse!
Just to confirm what the prior student said, the vaccinations DO NOT need to be completed prior to the application deadline. At the informational session I went to last Friday, they advised that you wait until you get accepted and hear back from an adviser. Apparently some of them are only good for a year, so if you get them too soon, they'll expire.
I hope that helps!
@TheRealSyd I just stalked the heck out of y'all's thread from last year, haha! I've been trying to track the TEAS scores and GPAs of those who were accepted vs. rejected. I've been working so hard to enter this program, and now that I've submitted my application, all I can do is sit and worry about it all, lol!
@UHCON2019 & TheRealSyd, According to Mrs. Medina, they've already received around 1,500 applications for the 2020 cohort. Do you happen to know how many applications were received for your cycle? And, if so, about how many were rejected out of hand for not meeting application requirements? Additionally, have y'all been able to find any commonalities between those who were rejected vs. accepted? Like work experience, multiple languages, volunteer work, GPAs, TEAS scores?
I really appreciate any info y'all can share!

Thank you so much! I wasn't able to make it to any of the informational sessions, so that is very relieving/helpful ?

In terms of GPA and TEAS scores:
> They varied greatly...some students had the best scores but didn’t get in due to other areas in the application being weak.
> I have no problem giving my Stats: I had an 80 TEAS and a 3.5 GPA.
> You’ve got this, don’t worry:) Let is know if you y’all get an interview so we can give y’all some tips;)
In terms of applications:
> Mrs. Medina and the faculty don’t really give out stats until orientation night when they invite your family to the pinning ceremony (they are still kind of vague when giving out that info) Our application cycle was around yours or a little less. I don’t really know how many applications were rejected but I do know that they always receive incomplete applications where the student forgets to fill in a thing or two (so they reject them right away)
Commonalities:
> Not really. We all have different backgrounds and volunteer experiences. At least 5-10% of the class speak different languages.
> My volunteer/work background is in both rural and urban areas
Rural
1. Health Clinic-Lab Technician
2. Hospital- ER Patient Care Tech
3. Nursing Home- Certified Nurses Aide
Urban
1. Institute for Health Disparities Research - HIV/AIDS Research Assistant
2. Alzheimer’s Association- Program advocacy and Activities Intern

Yes. The majority of us have a Bachelors of Science. But don’t get discouraged if you don’t. Like I said UH does a holistic view on applications.
