UH 2nd Degree BSN 2020 Applicants (University of Houston Second Degree BSN Program)

Published

Hello future nursing students!

I didn't see a forum for those of us applying to the University of Houston - Sugar Land nursing program in the Spring of 2020, so I decided to start one. I have already submitted my application and completed my CPR certification, so now there's just the waiting. I've attached all the resources from the UH website that I could find, just for everyone's convenience.

I do have a few questions though: is anyone else having issues submitting the SSN release form? I get an error message every time I try, and I haven't heard back from the school about it yet (I emailed them asking if it had been received). Are y'all applying to other accelerated programs? If so- could you share which ones?

I was also wondering what kind of stats everyone who's applying has, or if anyone has any info about past applicants/students and the scores/extracurriculars that they had before acceptance. If anyone would be willing to share that info, it would be super appreciated!

Good luck to everyone!

~Ari

Thank you so much for starting this forum!

I just submitted my SSN form today, and it said the fax was successful. I would suggest to call/email them but they have yet to answer when I've tried ?

Does anyone know if the immunizations are due by the application deadline?

Good evening future applicants,

Im currently in the UHCON nursing program. If y’all have any question just let me know.

That's awesome! I have many questions! Are you in the accelerated program? When did you hear back about your application? How are you liking the program?

Yes. I’m in the accelerated program. Our application closed around mid-August and I believe we interviewed the last week of September and found out a few days after if we got accepted. I’m not going to lie, the program is pretty tough. You basically don’t have a life for a year. We take 20+ credits per semester.

I have a question about the "UH CON Policy for Clinical Readiness Requirements." Part of this document states that applicants must submit "evidence of compliance" prior to the program application deadline. Are the CON Clinical Requirements such as Immunizations, CPR certification, etc. required before the application deadline??

Thank you so much for responding to this thread!!

No problem. For us this year we weren’t required to complete all clinical requirements until we got accepted. Most of my classmates didn’t not complete the requirements until 2-3 months into the program.

Do you know what kinds of TEAS scores and GPAs people who got accepted had or the general class size vs how many applied? I assume they're not JUST looking at GPAs, but I'm just fretting about acceptance.

Also- if you could tell your past self any advice about the program in order to be prepared, what would it be? What do you think has been the thing that prepared you the most for it, and what has been the hardest part?

Thank you so much for your willingness to let us pepper you with questions!!

TEAS Scores and GPAs varied. I believe that they received over 850 application and about 100+ were selected for an interview (102 were accepted) and as of now there about 75 of us are still in the program. There are not looking just at GPAs but more of your clinical experience. Most of us were CNAs and EMTs (we had a few teachers in the cohort). Its more of a holistic view.

I would suggest skimming through your textbooks before the semester starts because once the program begins you literally won't have time to read ALL of your textbooks (I highly recommend you manage your time wisely as there were be a lot of moments where you will feel burned out).
We also had the same issue with calling the UHCON program for more information (They wont really answer your questions) unless you come to an open house.

Wait, 850? So basically everyone who applied was offered an interview?

No. I meant to say that we were told at the interview that UHCON had received over 850 applications and that we were lucky enough to be in the 100+ that were selected for an interview.

Is mostly everyone in your program from the medical field?
