UH MEPN 2012

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Is anyone looking at University of Hawaii's MEPN program for Fall 2012? I'm originally from Honolulu and would LOVE to go back and do this program. Especially since I would pay in-state tuition! :)

I've looked over the lengthy forum about the program from 2009. Is there anyone who went to UH's program that started this Fall? I would be quite interested to hear your stats (GPA, etc.) and to find out how many people applied and how many were accepted/matriculated this year. I will also be taking A&P 2 and Microbiology in the Spring and I am curious if that will hurt me since I am not done with all the prereqs. They say you just have to finish them by July, but I am wondering if that is really true.

Any info previous MEPN people can give me would be great. Thanks!

Thank you so much everyone who wrote about their experiences. I also heard no interviews this year from some MEPN students I met at work while they were doing clinical rotations. I spoke to one who said she was happy with the program overall, but was confused as to why there are no interviews this year. I guess the current students feel that it is hard to get a full picture of someone on paper alone. Perhaps, the director has seen that most of those accepted were the ones they all liked the most on paper anyway. This would make sense for why they stopped doing interviews.

My co-worker, who is super supportive of me getting into this program asked some other MEPN students that she saw on the floor a bunch more.

She was told that there were WAY more applicants this year---like 400??? which is different from other postings...so I am not sure if these numbers were just grossly inflated, I am hoping so.

He also said, no interviews, and that the program told them all this as a group, I guess to hear the comments from the students, who were mostly in disagreement with no interviews.

Also, that the essays are a bit more formal and so it can sometimes be difficult to get points across regarding warmth and compassion with an essay, so they are probably relying more heavily on the reference letters.

This of course, are all just things I have heard and none have been confirmed. I am trying my best not to call the school and not to bother them. It is very difficult to wait, especially with no response after all this time. But, we can all rest assured that we are all in this same waiting game and to be prepared not to hear until the end of March, as it states on the website. Trying to stay busy and keeping my head away from figuring out plan B!?!

Do you all know whether we will be notified by phone, email, or postal mail? :)

Lol. The range of anticipated number of applicants is quite large here! I doubt that it's near 400 as that would be quite a jump from previous years. It would be nice to know though =)

so much suspense with this waiting to hear from them!! :)

i hope you all have a great weekend :)

Aloha ALL!

I was SUPER excited to find this board. I too am waiting to hear from the UH MEPN program, and I also heard from Shannon Mark there would be no interviews unless a specialty director wanted to conduct interviews. I applied for FNP/APHN as well. I will check back here regularly to see if anyone has heard anything. I can't wait to hear..... It's driving me crazy!!!! Good luck to everybody!

Has anyone had any contact with the school lately? E-mail? Calls?

I also wonder if they consider applicants for FNP and for FNP/APHN seperately. As in, I wonder if there be around 8 admits for each specialty or just 8 for FNP and then some students take more classes to satisfy the APHN requirements.

I HOPE that they consider those separately!!!!! :)

That gives 8 more of us a chance to be admitted!

However, I do not actually know the answer to that.

Maybe you should call and ask ;). And let us know anything you find out about that or any other admissions things...

Aloha!

Haha, blue! I think YOU should call! LOL!

It's too early to call right now, but I will if you really want me to :).

When I have called them in recent weeks, they have been super friendly and helpful,

and not once have they seemed like I was bothering them or that we need to stop calling, etc.

So that's good :).

I agree! They are very nice. At this point it doesn't make a difference whether they consider them separately. I mean while it would be nice to know, as would the number of applicants, decisions are probably close to being made and satisfying my curiosity will do nothing to change the outcome! I really want to know when the heck we are going to hear and how! =)

I called and talked to Shannon and he said that they will notify us "by March, via postal mail."

I asked him about our above question. He thought I was asking about the program curriculum but I was trying to ask about whether the two types of FNP tracks would be admitted separately (ie 8 each etc), but I guess I didn't word it the best way possible because he didn't know what I meant. Sorry about that one. I didn't want to re-explain it so I just thanked him.

Thanks MissHolland! It's been fun chatting about this process today :)
