Is anyone looking at University of Hawaii's MEPN program for Fall 2012? I'm originally from Honolulu and would LOVE to go back and do this program. Especially since I would pay in-state tuition! :)
I've looked over the lengthy forum about the program from 2009. Is there anyone who went to UH's program that started this Fall? I would be quite interested to hear your stats (GPA, etc.) and to find out how many people applied and how many were accepted/matriculated this year. I will also be taking A&P 2 and Microbiology in the Spring and I am curious if that will hurt me since I am not done with all the prereqs. They say you just have to finish them by July, but I am wondering if that is really true.
Any info previous MEPN people can give me would be great. Thanks!
I can try to answer a few questions based on my experiences in the 4th cohort1. They dont split up the specialty spots evenly so if 50 get excepted and there are 5 specialties it does not break down to 10 spots per specialty2. Public health specialty is all online so a dual degree doesnt affect number of spots3. The SIM lab IS amazing and the guy they havebin there right now teaching is awsome! However after semester 1 you wont really get to use the lab - in semester 2 we get 1 day a month there4. The program has new managmeny every year lol so there are issues with every cohort.Remember - be flexible! I'm helping put together the welcome party for you guys so I I'll see some of you in August, good luck!
Ah! That is so frustrating.. Both he and the director told me February.
SusieNinja- Thanks for all of your input! What are the facilities like where you are working most of the time (since you aren't in the SIM lab but a few days a week)? And how would you rate your overall experience there, the professors, & the schedules? Also, I was wondering, if it wouldn't be too much to ask, if you could describe your schedule during your first year. I just received my weekly schedule for a different Master's Entry program and I wanted to compare..
In theory, I love this program. I love Hawaii. I would do anything to go here... I am just worried about issues of credibility, especially for those of us on NP tracks. After reading some of the negative posts from anti-Master's Entry nurses, it just got me a little worried that it would be difficult to find jobs after graduating from an accelerated program like this. (People were calling MEPN students "clueless"...) What do you think?
Halletki -
I am waiting to hear too and I know it's hard. Here's what I think about MEPN students being "clueless" etc.: It's a fully accredited program, if you pass your exams and work hard you will still have those letters behind your name, just like someone who took a more traditional path. It's just like in ANY situation, the program is only going to give you what you put into it. It will be what you make of it. You can only be discredited as a professional if you let someone else discredit you. The destination is the same no matter the route you take to get there. And your route may give you a distinct advantage in that you have a degree and life experience other nurses may not have.
Just my two cents. For what it's worth :)
So I'm probably going to take myself out of the running for this program. Overall the cost is too much and since the RN portion of DE programs is extremely challenging I want a program with more structure that first year, so that I know what's coming. It's one thing to be flexible, it's another to be confused during a already difficult program.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know there's now 299 applicants and I've lived on island for 6 years now, pretty much all over so if you guys have any questions about where to live I don't mind helping you out.

300 applicants, ya'll. The thought of 500 was just too crazy to me so I had to ask =)
