UH Manoa GEPN Cohort 2020

Published

Hello,

I know it's fairly early, but I was wondering if there are any other applicants that are applying to UH Manoa's GEPN program for Fall 2020. If so, what track are you applying for and what are your stats? This would be my third time applying for the DNP (currently indecisive and thinking of applying for the APHN program instead), so I am hoping that I have worked towards becoming a more competitive applicant. I frequent these threads every application cycle, so I'm hoping by sharing my stats others will be a little less anxious.

Here are my stats - I have earned a Bachelors of Science in Public Health and have some experience working in a community health care facility focusing on the nutrition of women and children. I have also taken a CNA course, but I am not CNA certified. I am also a graduate student studying for my MPH with a current GPA of a 4.0 and I am also enrolling in a course to become a labor & post-partum doula.

Best of luck to everyone!

Has anyone have any outstanding pre reqs to fulfill? I have to take biochem & genetics but unsure where to take genetics. I’m seeing they only offer it at UH Manoa, so I’m wondering if I should apply for enrollment for Spring to fulfill the course?

I applied to GEPN on 10/6 and have not heard back as of yet, so I won't enroll in the final 2 pre reqs until I find out that I for sure got in. I'll need to take Genetics and Research methods in the spring if I am accepted. If you can, take BIOC 141 with Dr. Ashburn if he still teaches it. He explains things very well and kept it interesting. I think he was at LCC, but moved to UH West Oahu - I took the class online. And yes, I believe you can only take Genetics at UH Manoa.

Hi @peloton4life,

Thank you! I was accepted into DNP.

This year, I took some advice that another individual had given me on last year’s forum.

If you haven’t (and I never have until this application cycle) attend a GEPN info session! This year I attended 2 of them to make sure I got all the info I needed! It really provides you with so much more information on what they expect in regards to essay, resume & application.

For the resume portion I also structured it differently than I usually would. I tried to give them a better understanding of who I was and my reasons for applying as the essay doesn’t give them any info about who you are or your purpose for applying. I also included ALL of my accomplishments and volunteer work/experiences. I went back as far as I could and made sure I explained my skills and it’s relevancy. In the info session they explain this also, that volunteer work is gold and it was something I hadn’t included on my previous applications. I also didn’t include my previous employments from way back (I’m talking like high school/customer service jobs) and this year I did! They mentioned that they like to see the whole picture and to “go as far back as you can”.

For the essay, this year I really focused on actually ANSWERING THE QUESTION. Lol. I know it seems stupid but I looked back at my previous application essays and I realized that I barely answered the question. They really stress this in their info session! They don’t want to know anything else besides what the question is asking!

I also took sometime to write my essay, I believe I began drafting in June (assuming it was the same prompt).

Ive always applied within the month the application opens but this year I made it a goal to submit my app on opening day as it is on a rolling basis!

Hope this helped and wishing you best of luck!

Thanks for all of this information. Based on the information you gave, I did majority of the things listed, so praying for the best. I should've applied sooner though. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Could I get your guys input? I feel very lost and hopeless right now. I applied very early but haven’t heard back. Do you guys think I’m rejected or should I still have hope?

What day did you apply? Are you done with all of your pre requisites? Based on the past threads that I have read, it seems those who applied within the first week of September heard back by the end of October if they were accepted. If they didn't hear back, that meant a rejection letter was being sent.

I received the email for the MS track! I also have to take biochem and genetics. I also have to take nutrition because of the time restriction they've added to the prerequisites.

Where do you plan to take biochem? Are you at all worried about taking biochem and genetics in the same semester? Do you work full time?

I work full time and am worried about taking the courses together. I was looking at possibly taking biochem in Summer 2020. Do you have any opinions??

Thank you!!

Hey everyone!

I just want to clarify. If I applied right when the application was available and I have not heard back does that mean I didn't get in?

Thanks!!

I'm not sure. I would reach out to Chris Stutes and ask him.

Hi all,

Did anyone get their official letter of acceptance yet?

@nurse808 Not yet! I’ve been waiting for the mailman every day. Lol. Anticipating it any day now!

@kykyx Did you see my previous post? I am having difficulty figuring out where, when, and how to take Genetics. Do you work full time? The course is only offered on-campus in the middle of the day at UH. Also, do you have the prerequisites need to take the class?

This class has got me worried!

I actually had the same concerns! I have not taken the pre reqs which had me really worried about not only the costs but if I could even take them concurrently. Im just about set to take the class in the Spring but I am not taking it at Manoa. I’m not sure if there’s an option to private message on here but if there is PM me. If you are open to sharing your email let me know and I’ll leave mine below. I’ll let you know what my plans are in regards to that class.

@kykyx It wouldn't let me privately message you. You can email me at [email protected]
