Ugly Comments From A Nurse Friend

Published

been having problems with employment since i quit my pscyh job and to top it off ...listen to what my nurse friend has to say

1. pscyh nursing is lazy nursing:eek:

2. there aint no money in pscyh nursing...believe me:eek:

3. you cant do legal nursing in pscyh bec you dont have recent med surg experience:argue:

she works as a big hancho in government office and having a 9 to 5 job( she has masters in nursing ) . i still love pscyh nursing (did it the last 11 years ) but left the last job bec i got tired with low census..calling x2 hours before coming to work and being told to "come to work" by charge nurse (we have a staffing grid/matrix for nurse patient ratio) and being told to go home after slit, thunder and lightning upon arrival in unit (i work nights) bec they had more discharges between 9 pm and 10 pm and forgot to cancel me out.

i needed to vent guys...thanks for listening.... currently doing home health right now part time ....i had interview today for va hospital near me for pscyh position ..any feedbacks greatly appreciated..

Lots of medical nurses think psych nursing isn't "real nursing," but if they worked it they'd know better. I've also heard it's where old nurses go when they aren't healthy enough to do "real" nursing. :D I think you just have to let it roll off your back because you know what the truth is!

To give you some "real statistics" for whoever is interested, at my psych hospital....of the 15 RN's that I know,

Over 55-------2

40-50........... 9

25-40............4

Just another example of poor attitudes of nurses toward other nurses. We are often our own worst enemy. The most professional thing you can do is tell her her comment is duly noted and move on IMHO.

one of the reasons you may not see a lot of younger nurses in psych is because I think you need quite a bit of experience in nursing before you work in psych....you have the added mental issues on top of the medical ones to deal with....need really good assessment skills because the pts. can't always relate to you their physical issues...we have to spot them and get a consult to the MD for whatever reason we deem necessary... just my .02 on the "older nurses in psych" thinking....

I think it takes a special person to do psych nursing, or L&D, or peds, or whatever the specialty may be. We all tend to be drawn to what we are comfortable with which usually means we are good at our jobs. Sounds like rocknroll's friend has forgotten that there is more than one kind of nursing and that they are necessary to treat all kinds of patients.

LOL:yeah: Am I to old??? I just happen to be 56 years old and looking through your thread as I am considering getting in to your field. I've been out of hospital nursing for 8 years (due to burn out!) and doing therapeutic foster care in my home for adolecents with mental health/behavioral problems. Quite the challenge! I also have been providing a "stabilization bed" through the crisis response unit in our area for teens while services are being set up for child and family. My two teens recently aged out of foster care and now I am wondering if I might like psyche nursing. I have lost my IV skills and I am a bit intimidated by the thought of computers in nursing now. I have 30 years of hospital experience, however, now I am lacking confidence getting back in. I do know that I like working with the kids. Any ideas on how to figure out if I'd be suited to psych hospital work ? My licence is current and I have kept my fingers in nursing doing some occupational health and foot care. Thanks guys...

Sounds like you would be perfectly suited to work on an adolescent unit in a psych hospital.....don't need IV skills....we do not use computer for charting, still paper charts ......don't worry, you will do fine....you have the most important skill needed....listening and liking to work with the kids...

Go for it....good luck......
