UFV BSN SEPTEMBER 2020 INTAKE

Published

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying to UFV's BSN program for the Fall 2020 intake and figured I would create a new post where those of us applying for the Fall 2020 intake can share/help each other out with the application/admission process. Anything from discussing GPA for pre-reqs, volunteer/work experience, etc. A little bit about me - I am just about finished my HSCI degree from SFU but took this semester off to retake some of the high school pre-reqs (Chem 11, Bio 12, Math 12). I did fairly well in these classes during high school but figured I could retake them again and see if I do any better.

As far as my healthcare related experience goes, I have been volunteering at a seniors home for 6 years now, and was recently hired by the same seniors home to work as a recreation aide. I also worked as a recreation aide at another seniors Independent Living/Complex Care facility for about 1.5 years. I also spent a year volunteering at a high intensity rehab unit where I helped the OT facilitate various exercise groups (this was during a time where I was still unsure between OT and nursing).

I'm hoping to complete my high school pre reqs by the beginning of January so that I can make the January 31 deadline. This will be my first time applying to UFV or any nursing program for that matter.

Hopefully this forum can be a place where us prospective UFV BSN students can help each other throughout the application/admission process and give each other pointers! Best of luck everyone! ?

Good to know! I’m coming off a 24-hour shift at work at 3 and then racing home for the session. I’m definitely not in the head space for essay writing at this moment, but we’ll see what flows out of me ?

What made you guys choose to apply at UFV for nursing? How do you think UFV compares to UBCO?

there was 30 applicants in my info session and then if there is the same amount in each, I’d say around 120..? ?

I think Cindy said there was 180 applicants so they might have more people in the other groups? Then ~ 90 make it to the interviews and 48 make it into the program I think?

Any clue how many progress to the interview and then get accepted??I know I’m overthinking but knowing helps me de stress .

also those who have written the essay, were you allowed to quickly brainstorm on a piece of paper? Like was it a live video chat while you wrote?

For those who had the information session today, how are you feeling?

Super nervous! I’m too scared to go back and read over what I wrote cause I feel like it’s terrible. Usually I find it pretty easy to write but it took me a good ten-fifteen minutes just to get my ideas straight and stop deleting everything I had written so far. Hopefully they like my answer! I guess we’ll all find out next week ?

Hey guys,

CONGRATS to those of you who made it to the info session and good luck to all of you who have already written your essay and to those who still have to write it. I originally started this forum for the Sept 2020 intake, but I wasn't able to finish my pre-reqs in time and will be applying to the Jan 2021 intake instead.

I had a question about the pre-req grading scale and was wondering if any of you could shed some light... I am aware that if the post-secondary equivalents of the pre-reqs are taken, they are converted to UFV's grading scale (A+, A, A-, etc), and that if the high school pre reqs are taken instead (Chem 11, Bio 12, Math 11, English 12) they use the same high school grading system (86-100% = an A, 73-85% = a B). In this case, how would UFV differentiate between letter grades for the same % received? I mean to say, getting a 96% in one of the post secondary pre-reqs would be seen by UFV as an A+, whereas getting a 96% in the high school equivalent of the pre-req would only be seen as an A... Is applying using the high school pre-reqs a disadvantage over completing the post secondary equivalent pre-reqs? I hope I'm making sense LOL... If anyone has an idea, or if anyone applied to the program using their high school grades only and made it to the info session, please let me know!

So they don’t really differentiate, my math mark is 96% but they only view it as an A. In theory I guess it’s an advantage to go to UFV and do them but I’m not sure if you get more points for an A-/A/A+ or if they just count that as an A to make it fair for people who’ve completed at the high school level. Not sure if that makes much sense? They seem pretty hush hush about most of it and don’t really want to answer many questions that are too specific. Many people asked questions about the application process and points during my info session and were given super vague answers.

It actually makes no difference in having a A+ or an A-. An A receives 4 points and a B 3 points, if you are applying with 4 A’s then your max amount of points you can get is 16 for your prerequisites. Then your volunteer hours, and your references and essay, interview questions all get a score.

Those who wrote today how did you feel ?

Not confident in my essay cause I had trouble thinking of what to write and didn't finish, but I liked being able to type it. I like the online format of the info session though it was nice having the slideshow right in front of you and easier to follow along on the Q&As

Now to wait ?

I also liked the chat option. I don’t know how I feel about the interview being written this intake though .
