UFV BSN SEPTEMBER 2020 INTAKE

Published

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying to UFV's BSN program for the Fall 2020 intake and figured I would create a new post where those of us applying for the Fall 2020 intake can share/help each other out with the application/admission process. Anything from discussing GPA for pre-reqs, volunteer/work experience, etc. A little bit about me - I am just about finished my HSCI degree from SFU but took this semester off to retake some of the high school pre-reqs (Chem 11, Bio 12, Math 12). I did fairly well in these classes during high school but figured I could retake them again and see if I do any better.

As far as my healthcare related experience goes, I have been volunteering at a seniors home for 6 years now, and was recently hired by the same seniors home to work as a recreation aide. I also worked as a recreation aide at another seniors Independent Living/Complex Care facility for about 1.5 years. I also spent a year volunteering at a high intensity rehab unit where I helped the OT facilitate various exercise groups (this was during a time where I was still unsure between OT and nursing).

I'm hoping to complete my high school pre reqs by the beginning of January so that I can make the January 31 deadline. This will be my first time applying to UFV or any nursing program for that matter.

Hopefully this forum can be a place where us prospective UFV BSN students can help each other throughout the application/admission process and give each other pointers! Best of luck everyone! ?

I’ve heard that we’ll hear about info sessions by the end of March. Last years September intake heard about info sessions on the 19th of March. Then info session was first week of April and they heard about interviews two weeks after info sessions and then heard if they got in two weeks after that. I haven’t heard anything yet either!

UFV doesn't have a waitlist for the BSN program. They just defer you to the next intake, I've asked so many health study faculty members about it and they've all told me no. And if you don't have AT LEAST a 3.75 GPA then they won't really consider you for their program. They told me to upgrade my 3.6 GPA cause they want a min of 3.75.

Info sessions happen end of April and the interviews are usually early May. A friend of mine got offered both for the fall 2019 intake.

As long as you have As in each of the pre-reqs, I'd say you have a pretty good chance of getting in. Although, I'm a bit confused because the high school pre-reqs are calculated differently by the Admissions team than the post-secondary pre reqs. For example, getting an 86 or a 96 in one of the high school pre-reqs would still only be calculated as an A. But, if you got a 96 in the post-secondary equivalent of that pre-req, they would calculate it as an A+. So I'm not sure whether taking the post secondary versions of the pre-reqs puts applicants at an advantage over those applying with high school courses?

Yeah if you have all A's then you probably have a pretty good shot! I dont think there's any disadvantage tho since they just look at what grade you got

Has anyone contacted, or heard from, Health Studies regarding pandemic response? I'm wondering if they'll have to extend the program for current students and in turn delay doing a September intake... What are your thoughts?

I had emailed them on the 20th of March but have yet to receive a response. I doubt they’d do a delayed intake with the need of nurses right now. Students in their final semester are still able to finish their preceptorship and classes are still ongoing for students but in an online setting. The only thing they’ll need to make up for is clinical hours so maybe they’ll do that in the Summer?

Okay so I just received this from ******* at health studies,

The School of Health Studies is proceeding with the selection process for the Fall intake for the BSN program. Due to the current COVID-19 situation we are currently reviewing the process and adjusting accordingly. The School of Health Studies will be in contact with applicants who have an application in a position to be selected for the information session in the next few weeks providing the COVID-19 situation allows us to continue working.

Hopefully we’ll all hear in a couple weeks this was received mar.30th

I really have no idea how they will conduct the info session and interviews with everything going on. It will look a lot different then in the past. Good luck to everyone!! ☺️

Has anyone been contacted with an invitation to an information session?

Nothing yet, I emailed last week and they said it would be a few more weeks until they would start contacting people about info sessions and that they haven’t begun that process yet ?

I just received an email invitation for the information session!

Awesome!! Does the email include any information about how they plan to do the info session, and when they're going to start?

I received an email to the info session last Friday too! it's all going to be online and mine is Thursday, not sure if there's other days as well but they sent us a link to join the session. We have 30 minutes at the beginning to write the essay then we have 15 minutes to send it to them.
