UFV BSN SEPTEMBER 2020 INTAKE

Published

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying to UFV's BSN program for the Fall 2020 intake and figured I would create a new post where those of us applying for the Fall 2020 intake can share/help each other out with the application/admission process. Anything from discussing GPA for pre-reqs, volunteer/work experience, etc. A little bit about me - I am just about finished my HSCI degree from SFU but took this semester off to retake some of the high school pre-reqs (Chem 11, Bio 12, Math 12). I did fairly well in these classes during high school but figured I could retake them again and see if I do any better.

As far as my healthcare related experience goes, I have been volunteering at a seniors home for 6 years now, and was recently hired by the same seniors home to work as a recreation aide. I also worked as a recreation aide at another seniors Independent Living/Complex Care facility for about 1.5 years. I also spent a year volunteering at a high intensity rehab unit where I helped the OT facilitate various exercise groups (this was during a time where I was still unsure between OT and nursing).

I'm hoping to complete my high school pre reqs by the beginning of January so that I can make the January 31 deadline. This will be my first time applying to UFV or any nursing program for that matter.

Hopefully this forum can be a place where us prospective UFV BSN students can help each other throughout the application/admission process and give each other pointers! Best of luck everyone! ?

Hey!

I just dropped off my additional forms today and now the wait starts! I currently have an A+ in Math11, A+ in BIO093/12, A in Eng105 and B+ in Chem 083/11. Really hoping these grades and working as an HCA in residential and acute for the past two years will get me into the program! Can't wait to here more from other applicants and support each other!

Hey!

It's awesome to hear from you. I'm cramming to finish my pre-reqs before January 15th, but I am hopeful that I will get them done on time! Is this your first time applying to the program?

Yes! My first time! I did my care aide program at Kpu in September of 2017 and graduated April 2018 and have been slowly doing my pre-reqs for RN since then and didn’t want to apply until I figured I had a decent shop of getting in ? I believe you can get them done!

hi guys! I'm hoping to apply to UFV for the Jan 2021 intake, but I'm just tagging onto this post to find some information about the fall intake. I currently have an A+ in Bio, A- in Eng 105, B in Math, which I'm going to try to upgrade and I still need to take Chem. I also volunteer at a hospital and an alzheimer's care home and should have well over 100 hours by the time I apply. Is there anything else I can do to increase my chances of getting in! Thanks and good luck to you all.

To me that sounds pretty good. If you’re doing chem at ufv raji is really good. Just make sure you really pay attention after the second midterm. I did a night shift and missed one class and then felt so lost ? personally I would definitely make the chem my highest priority as they do say people can get in with 3 A’s and a B and their website stil says 2 A and 2 B to get to the info session. If you are upgrading it though and are anywhere near bakerview I highly recommend taking math 11 foundations there, that’s where I did mine and the teacher is amazing! You could possibly look at taking some one/two day courses that involve medicine to add to your application but I’m not sure if they pay much attention to that even though they have the additional education portion on the application. I’ve heard of people get turned down that have every grade above 90% and heard of others getting in with just the 2B’s and 2 A’s so it’s super hard to say exactly what they’re looking for ??‍♀️ You could meet with an advisor to ask and they may be able to suggest some things. One advisor I went to didn’t have much to offer me and didn’t have the answers to many of my questions but another one was amazing to talk to!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently wait-listed for the January 2020 intake, but I haven't heard of any open seats so I'm anticipating going through the process again for the September 2020 intake. I originally applied with A's in each pre-req: English091, Math085, Chem083, and Bio093, and about 45 hours of experience in harm reduction. Since then I've been working to complete whatever classes are required but are not limited to nursing students (Eng105, Sociology, A+P, Stats), and I've doubled my volunteer hours. It's hard to make yourself stand out among the other applicants when everyone has similar grades and experience. Focus on what nursing means to you, as well as the requisite skills and abilities in preparation for writing the essay and answering the interview questions ?

Hi KelseyR,

I am sorry that you haven't heard anything back yet... would you mind explaining your waitlist process? As far as I knew, I didn't think UFV's BSN program even had a waiting list! You have really good grades and I'm sure that by doubling your volunteer hours, you have a better chance for the September intake :) In regards to the A&P courses, are we able to complete them ahead of time? I thought that the A&P courses needed to be taken concurrently with the nursing program, although I could be wrong? I am just working on finishing my pre reqs in the next 2 weeks, and then my application should be complete as well :) I wish you the best of luck!

Hi! For each intake, a handful of applicants get put on a wait list incase anyone that got in turns down their seat. Health Studies wouldn’t confirm the number of spots on the list, but the rumour I’ve heard is 10. It doesn’t carry over, so each intake has a new wait list. And I took A+P at BCIT, they offer it independently of their nursing program. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll do my best to answer them! ?

Ah, ok.. I didn't know that - thank you for sharing! Since you have already gone through the essay writing and interview process, would you mind sharing your experience? What was the nature of the essay prompt and how long of a response was required? Also, for the interview, I have heard that it is set up like a panel with different stations and you get a few minutes at each station... how long was the interview process all together? Did the questions have anything to do with nursing specifically, or were they more generic (ie. "tell me how you manage stressful situations" or "name a time you experienced a crisis and how you dealt with it" type questions)? Thank you again for the pointers/advice, it is really appreciated for first time applicants like myself! ?

The essay question is pretty broad and asks for your opinion in a traditionally structured 5 paragraph essay. It feels like more than 30 minutes when you're writing the essay though, thankfully. And you're right about the interviews - there are different stations with different health studies staff members at each one. The whole interview took about half an hour, and there were all sorts of questions - generic and specific to nursing.

Does anyone know when we will be hearing back from UFV? I haven't received an interview request and I am wondering if anyone else has or knows when we might.
