Hi!
Just wanna start this thread about UCSF RN Residency 2011. For those who applied, have you heard anything back?
Thanks!
I TRULY hope that the new grad situation gets better. My heart aches for new grads right now. It took me 2 YEARS to get into acute care, but it finally happened for me. I always hated the "Don't worry....it will get better......Don't worry....it will happen eventually" talks/messages but it did actually happen and I am so grateful and elated (yet scared to death too).I wish I could make things better for everyone. Please don't give up (and I know how hard it is to read that statement). Good luck to ALL!!!!!
you say it took you 2 years to get into acute care. can you describe your journey? I am thinking I might have to go the uncoventional route to get there, maybe you have some ideas?
I received a couple emails yesterday with info re: the background check and pre-employment requirements. You might want to call them if you don't receive anything this week(at least that's what the NM told me).
Thank you so much. I got an e-mail yesterday as well! What unit are you going to be working in?
To Whoever Pulled Out of the UCSF PCICU training program:
If you're out there reading this, thank you. You just gave me a chance at my ideal job I still can't believe this is happening. I wish only good things to you in your career and all other areas of your life.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Hi all,
I'm new to both allnurses and the Bay Area, and I'm hoping some of you can help me out. I just applied to the UCSF Residency Program (super long-shot, it looks like, since from what you all are saying it looks like the positions are filled, and I just happened to find one that was still posted).
Can you fill me in on how the hospitals around here fill RN Residency programs and when they're typically posted? I've heard the job situation in the area is pretty dismal, but at least from what some of you are saying, with a lot of persistence and networking, the hunt will eventually pay off.
I would really appreciate any info (or reassurance) - and congrats to those of you who got into (or got interviews for!) UCSF.
This is geared towards anyone accepted into UCSF's Pedi ICU program (card/nicu/or med/surg):
I don't know if the NM told you to get this book (Critical Care Nursing of Infats & Children by Curley & Moloney) but I was having a really hard time finding it because it's out of print. But you can download pdfs of the chapters for free on the upenn.edu website here:
http://repository.upenn.edu/miscellaneous_papers/4/
Hope that's helpful.
Hello all!
Has anyone heard anything about future UCSF Residency program dates? I'm wondering if they are planning on doing another one this summer for those of us who will be graduating in a couple of months. I spoke to someone in HR a few weeks ago and she said they would not offer another residency...indefinitely because of eRecord. Have any of you heard otherwise?
Thanks and good luck on the job hunt to all!
@nur53:
I did initially get a rejection email and then about a week later the nurse manager called me and offered me the position. Which unit did you interview for? Most of the units have already started (except the ICN) so if it's another unit (unless there are other units starting later I don't know about), you're probably already out of luck. I would suggest contacting the NM, probably via email, and let them know how much you wanted the UCSF job, but would also like some constructive criticism about what you could change for future interviews to achieve your goal. they might not respond, but it doesn't hurt to ask and it makes you stand out as someone who really wants it for potential next time go arounds.
It could be that they went with an internal candidate or had another reason that had nothing to do with you. Competition is steep. I graduated 9 months ago and have only just now found a job and let me tell you, it's been a looong 9 months. If there's one thing I've learned out of it all, it's that you have nothing if you don't have a network. You got far enough in the process to interview with UCSF, that means that your paperwork is all in order and at the very least you look amazing on paper. The right first job is out there for you and if you're putting your nose to the grindstone, you'll get it. There is an end in sight. Just keep remembering why you went to nursing school in the first place and keep those thoughts alive in your search for that job. Good luck!
@malapata: This is the only residency program they are doing this year because there's a lot of changes happening (like hr told you) but fear not! The fact that they hired 41 of us this time in comparison to groups of 2-6 they've hired in previous training programs, shows that things are turning around. There are other programs outside of UCSF that will open up in the summer, but I know many people in my class who graduated last may who are just starting their new grad programs now. You're doing the right thing starting your research. As I've stated before, START NETWORKING NOW! It will save your nursing life:
