UCSF RN Residency 2011

Published

Hi!

Just wanna start this thread about UCSF RN Residency 2011. For those who applied, have you heard anything back?

Thanks!

My interview is a week from Monday, but if you want to get together (either in SF or Oakland where I live) and let me know how yours went/specific questions they asked that would be fantastic! I don't know if your interview is early in the morning but we do 4 square in the BART (bay area rapid transit) parking lot Thursday nights from 9-midnight & I'm trying to convince the guys to make it my birthday square since I missed most of it last week due to unforeseen travel delays. If that sounds like something you'd be into, check it out! & if not & you want to get a cup of coffee & debrief, I could use all the help I can get!

To those who received a call or email to interview - May I ask what you think made your friend stand out from other applicants to be chosen for an interview? Did they have prior healthcare experience or precept at UCSF? Thank you.

I did my preceptorship in the PCICU @ UCSF (and made sure I got some face time with the nurse manager while I was there, as well as baking a ton of cookies everyone on the staff would remember me fondly). I've applied to other UCSF new grad positions that weren't on my precepted floor and didn't even get called for an interview. I'm also bilingual with ASL, but I think that it was mostly having that face time with the managers. I will say that I sat down with her once to tell her about how much I loved the unit and how I would love to work there and her response was that she looked at every application thoroughly & they only take the best of the bunch and just because I did my preceptorship on the unit doesn't mean that I'll necessarily get an interview. Since I know that I'm working/practicing super extra hard for my interview on Monday. Most people I know who have gotten jobs, it has been mostly on account of knowing someone who knows someone who can put in a good word to at least get your resume LOOKED at. Talk to anyone who knows someone who might know someone who works in the hospital and ask if they're hiring. Talk to random people you see on the street wearing scrubs, volunteer in the hospital and put in your face time. Getting the job happens in the interview, but getting the interview is *mostly* about who you know.

I just got a call today to interview for the acute care unit. I don't have prior healthcare exp, but do have a BSN. My interview is this friday. Any more tips besides what's been said already on the site? THANKS

So for those of us who have not been contacted, don't be deterred just yet... I called and actually got a hold of a NR from UCSF in regards to the training program today. She informed me that they are still in the middle of contacting people, and that the interview deadline is next Friday. Some of the units haven't even started calling people yet, so you may still be in the running. Her advice was the "sit tight"

Hello Everyone, I would like to share my story about my experience with the 2011 UCSF New Grad Program. My intention is not to discourage anyone who has not interviewed yet, but to hopefully cheer up some of you who have interviewed and not gotten the job.

I applied to the UCSF RN Residency the first day it was posted and was thrilled that I was called for an interview. I called an advance practice nurse I know who works on the unit to let her know. She was happy for me, and we decided to talk the day before my interview to go over a few things. When she called me, I knew she had bad news. She said she talked with the two people who would be interviewing me and that there were "inside" people who had already gotten the two jobs available on that unit. They were new RN's who had already been working at UCSF in another capacity. The truth was that the jobs were already taken, but because of protocol, the unit had to interview a certain number of people to make it look like it was an even playing field. But it wasn't. I was felt totally disappointed, but decided I was still going in for my interview and would give it my best shot.

As soon as I got in for my interview I sensed that the CNS and the NM were not interested in me at all. They barely looked up at me and only asked me 3 questions. At the end of the interview, in a very tactful way, I let them know that I knew the jobs were taken. To my surprise, they instantly warmed up and looked me in the eye and we spent the next 10 minutes talking about how competitive the job market is in the bay area, and where else I should apply outside of SF. I am sure they don't like having to pretend to interview people either.

All in all, it was a big disappointment, but I decided to call it a practice interview. Best of luck to everyone, and to those of you who made it into the Residency Program, Congratulations! :heartbeat

How did your interview go? What kinds of questions did they ask you? Any tips/advice for me on Monday?

I.Heart.SF: For which unit were you interviewing?

My interview went okay I think. It was 8 interviewees for one position though with two people who are already working as CNAs on the unit, so I'm a long shot. They asked the usual interview questions and a couple of clinical questions relating to nursing interventions for general scenarios.

No real tips here...just dress nice, be ready, and be confident.

The two people interviewing me asked:

1. Tell us about yourself

2. Why do you want to work on this unit?

3. How would a supervisor describe you?

No behavioral questions. But, like I said, my spots were taken already so it wasn't a legit interview. I have two friends who interviewed for PICU and they said their interviews were challenging with not only situational and behavioral questions but also some nursing scenario questions. So if your interview is tough then that is a good sign. It means they really are interviewing you.

Johns Hopkins has a great interview guide full of questions to prepare. Here is the link:

Good luck!

Hey I.Heart.SF,

My interview was similar, not as distant as you described (they were really nice actually, maybe they felt bad because I went into the interview sick!) but their questions were more on the casual side. They also hired 2 people so I am wondering if I interviewed with the same unit as you, I interviewed with perinatal services what about you? If that is the case on the unit I don't feel as bad not getting the job!
