2014 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hey everyone! Given that applications are due a month from today, I figured it was about time to start a thread. How are everyone's personal statements and applications coming?

Specializes in Emergency.
Hi everyone. I'm reapplying this year to the AGNP specialty. I interviewed last year for FNP but didn't make the final cut. I think I did not have a clear grasp on the role of a FNP hence my specialty change. Good luck to all!

Did you apply for the HIV focus as well? That's what I'm doing (ANP with HIV focus). I'd love to do the FNP track, but, next to Midwifery, it is the most competitive specialty and UCSF is already competitive as is, haha.

@susifen hi there, you are correct it was a typo!! UPENN is having an info session in SF on 10/12 @ the Sir Francis Drake hotel. Not Yale, all their interviews are on their campus. Sorry if that got anyone's hopes up!

I too am curious why the switch from FNP. I chose AGNP because I have no interest in working with kids. I am fairly self aware and I know that anything even remotely related to peds is not where my skill set lies. Teenagers are fine, they can communicate like an adult (most of the time haha). A lot of nurses (RNs) have said to me choosing AGNP over FNP really limits your scope of practice and it may be unwise long-term. I know several AGNP and FNPs, all of which are gainfully employed and happy with their jobs. I think you just have to ask yourself who do you believe you can help the most and go that route.

DentHygTurningNP, sorry for the late reply....had finals week and then was trying to enjoy my 2 week "vacation" after the INTENSE summer quarter we just had! Anyway, here are the stats:

AGCNS - 4

AGNP - 5

AGNP - HIV - 2

APPHN - 2

FNP - 17

Midwifery - 11

OCNS - 2

OEH - 2

PMHNP - 7

PNP - 5

I got in as FNP. I'm pretty sure our class had a wide variety of stats but I'm sure most of us were above 3.0 GPA. If any of you ever come here for the information sessions they will continually stress that they're looking at the ENTIRE PERSON CONCEPT. While you may be lacking in one area, if you have some AMAZING experience, that can more than compensate for deficiencies elsewhere.

Thanks so much @samdaman for the feedback about the breakdown by concentration. I applied for PMHNP and had spoken last year with one of the department heads who said they generally take 6-9 students for that track. Fingers crossed now!

I know it's a bit early. But, has anyone heard back from them yet? I think decisions are made anywhere from late September to typically November.

I thought I heard we wouldn't know till December - February. I'm forgetful as to where that info came from.... but definitely takes more than a month I think!

If you look at their website, it looks like they screen through the fall and start letting people know around December.

gudbee also posted a list of when interview notifications have gone out in previous years on this forum fairly recently--they were all at the beginning or middle of December as well.

Thanks for the info Samdaman!! I hope you're really enjoying the MEPN program!!! :)

To all asking why the switch from FNP to AGNP...my experience and goals do not lend much to working with peds. I chose FNP primarily because I thought only being in this specialty would allow me to achieve my goals. That was my lack of knowledge on the scope of practice of an NP no matter the specialty... I am not concentrating in HIV.

the wait is so agonizing! When you log-in to check the status of your application, does anyone else show a status update box with dates of most recent updates? it seems mine was last updated Aug 30th, the Friday before the deadline (I locked my app and had all my materials sent in by Aug 25th). Does anyone else who submitted all their documents around the time I did show an update on their page for any dates after Sept 1st? I hope this makes sense and I'm not confusing anyone with my post :)
