2014 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Published

Hey everyone! Given that applications are due a month from today, I figured it was about time to start a thread. How are everyone's personal statements and applications coming?

Just a heads up! I heard from one of the professors on the admission committee that they are meeting to make decisions tomorrow. Which means you can hear as early as Friday! Good luck everyone :)

Thank you thank you thank you for telling everyone!

No problem! I was a mess last year waiting for admissions results. It'll all be worth it in a few days :)

Thanks for the info, kdiem! I'm such a mess right now. lol. I keep checking my email, and every new email makes me jump. I'm trying to relax, but it's so hard. I heard from all the other schools that I applied to, so I'm just waiting for UCSF.

I heard from UCSF in the morning around 9am. But I'm sure that all depends on whenever they update the application portal. A big good luck to all! UCSF is worth the wait :)

Kdiem

what specialty are you? I wish I could have gone to the brunch w current students but I worked. I don't feel I really got a sense of the program from interview day. Just how awful is the first year. What if it's been a minute since I was sitting in a physiology class? Am I in for hell?

Hi Mentalhealthadvocate! I'm in the midwifery/women's health NP specialty. You can personal message me if you have specific questions. I'll be happy to respond.

kdiem, do you (or anyone else on this forum) happen to know if the professors on the admissions committee put more weight on the interview portion versus the application/documentation portion. Just curious to know what the deciding factors are. Thanks!!

ToFNPandBeyond,

To be honest, I'm not sure what portion they weigh more. But I get the sense they truly look at your whole application as a whole. UCSF does not offer tons of interviews, so getting past that initial step is huge! Then I'm sure if you didn't slip up like crazy during your interview, you probably have a really high chance of getting in. UCSF also offers the most spots for FNP candidates.

Good job on the interview! I just wanted to correct you that UCSF is not #1. UPenn is. UCSF happens to be #2. ;-)

Sorry to kill it for you, but since there are 3 schools tied for 1st, UCSF is #4!

Do all these rankings matter in the career world. Just wondering. I mean if I get into Vanderbilt and UCSF but just love the environment at Vanderbilt am I stupid to go to a "#15" school. I mean if I come back to the Bay Area does UCSF look better on my resume? And what about Yale. That's not "ranked" as high as UCSF but it's certainly pretty fancy sounding!

If you go to Yale or UCSF, the chances of employment are pretty solid. The Bay is more saturated, but there are still plenty of jobs elsewhere (varies slightly by specialty). I would choose UCSF over Yale because its a more established program. In the past few years, Yale has had several administrative issues (ex: requiring a class but not having enough spots in the class, and therefore delaying graduation for some students) that make me nervous.

When I applied to Yale, they killed their gerontology program a couple months later so everyone who applied had to choose a different specialty. Kind of shocking, really. I'm not sure why they did that.
