UCSD New Grad Residency Jan/Feb 2022

Published

Hello everyone! New Grad Nurse here! Just graduated and wondering if anyone else has applied to the UCSD New Grad Residency? Don’t know if anyone who has applied yet has heard back? My statuses just say “open”.

Oh that's interesting. How long after your online applications did you receive those references? I interviewed for Med/Onc PCU yesterday and received an e-mail to complete the reference list today. Crossing my fingers and hoping that it's a good sign! But congratulations on your ICU offer!

Is this Med/Onc PCU position in  La Jolla or Hillcrest?

Unit 5FG Jacob's Medical Center/ La Jolla!

Hi! I'm wondering if those who were updated to "referred to hiring" and even those who were offered interviews/jobs already have their license? I just finished school December 10th, so haven't taken NCLEX yet. Super bummed my apps haven't even made it out of the "application received" status - so trying to figure out where I can improve on my application for other places!

I was actually wondering the same thing. I just graduated a week before you. I am curious to see if anyone got “referred to hiring” isn’t licensed yet.

Unfortunately, with the amount of applicants that UCSD gets and the competitiveness of it, most people who don’t already have their RN or NCLEX date when applying don’t even get considered. For myself, I was only able to get an interview on the unit I worked as a tech when I didn’t have my RN.

@CombatMedictoNurse That makes sense! Thanks for your input!! I was assuming for whatever reason that the residencies for Feb/Mar start were for December graduates (thinking that people who graduated in May/June would have already started in positions) - but I completely understand prioritizing someone who already has their license over someone pending!

Does anyone know how soon you hear back after interviews? This week, I interviewed for Med/Surg and 2 East IMU/PCU. Next week, I have an interview for ICU/CCU, Burn ICU, and PCU/Telemetry.

Anyone with a job offer and an offer letter know when the exact start date for this cohort is? I've heard multiple start dates, a few managers have said January 23rd and a couple have said February 14th and just wanted to see if there would be different start dates.

every unit has different start dates. mine begins on the second week of January. ? I believe there is a new grad RN orientation every other week, so there doesn't seem to be one date for all the new grad RN cohort to meet each other

That's awesome! Thanks for the info. Which unit did you get hired for if you don't mind me asking!

I've got an interview for the telemetery/PCU floor this week and this will be my first nursing interview ever. Anybody got any tips? I'm super nervous.

Congrats on your interview! Do you know if it's in-person or virtual?

I'd say the first thing to do is to research a bit about UCSD and the unit and figure out why you want to be a part of the unit? Usually most interviews start out with "Tell me about yourself" or "Why do you want to work for us/UCSD?"

Next, I would try to come up with some behavioral question examples such as "Name a time when you encountered a difficult patient. How did you react? or "Name a time when you received criticism from a preceptor. How did you respond to the criticism?"

I've noticed many units now don't ask very many (if not at all) any clinical based questions. The only unit that asked me those were the ICU but most units understand that this cohort has very limited clinical experiences and a lot of the managers I've talked to have expressed that they want to hire on personality/work ethic rather than expertise in clinical knowledge. They can train you on clinical stuff but they want personable, hardworking team players. Try to show that through your examples!
