UCLA Summer 2020 New Grad Residency

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi! Haven't seen a thread for this yet (please correct me if I'm wrong) but UCLA's website says the applications open in March for Summer. Hopefully I didn't miss it

Thank you for the update! Do you think they will be delaying the start dates as well? The program usually started late August/early September. I am graduating in a few weeks and want to be sure that I will be able to get my license in time, but the testing centers are really backed up, some people aren't able to schedule until July.

I have no idea. I can see a case for starting it a little later and a case for it starting on time. If I had to guess, it would start on time because if they delay it, it will back up for the Winter cohort later this year as well. Just a guess though.

And I'm also graduating soon as well. July is about the time I was expecting to take my NCLEX regardless of the pandemic. Hopefully early July though.

I am also an internal employee. The census at both hospitals have been low. I heard through the grapevine that the some of the recent new grad cohort may not end up working because there's not enough money. So chances of anyone getting hired this next cohort are really low. They want to hire travelers or nurses with experience.

Thank you for the update! This is super helpful. Just out of curiosity, is the job market always this competitive for New Grad RNs in the LA area? I am from the East Coast, I graduated with my BSN in November and moved here in March. I have been applying since February and I am having a hard time finding a RN position that is willing to hire a new grad. Is anyone else in the same position? I appreciate any advice and thank you in advance!

Generally speaking, yes. LA is a competitive market unless you have a year of experience from what I understand (still not a nurse yet so my opinion is based on what I know from work). It also depends on the type of nursing you want to do. New grad programs in the area are hyper competitive, especially at major teaching hospitals. I don't really have any other advice to give aside from just keep applying and apply broadly. Might even have to commute a ways outside of LA to get your first job. Once you get 6 months to a year under your belt though, you can get hired pretty easily. Good luck.

Thank you so much! Solid advice. I really appreciate the info!!

Hello all! Before COVID started my plan was to apply to UCLA as part of the Winter cohort because I do not graduate from my program until mid August. I am just wondering if anybody has any new information on the Summer 2020 cohort? If they do end up still going forward with the hiring process, I might apply earlier than Winter because it has been delayed so much. Obviously, I don't expect this to happen with the rising case numbers, but just wondering if anybody had heard anything?

Hey guys,

Has anyone heard about anything? The website says the Summer cohort has been postponed and that has been so long. Do you think the Winter cohort will open up at all?

Unfortunately UCLA updated their website. They are officially not having a Summer 2020 cohort, and that they don't have additional information for the Winter cycle. Although, I have heard from internal employees that they will be opening for the Winter cycle. Is anyone planning to work before applying for UCLA's Winter cycle? Or would that look bad...leaving another hospital after a couple of months just to do a new gad position?
