UCLA MECN 2021

Published

Hi everyone!

I am planning on applying to UCLA's MECN program for 2021 and since I did not see a thread here yet I wanted to get one going for us to share questions and concerns. Good luck to everyone!

Hi! How far back are you going in your resumes for the application? Should I include stuff from high school in 2013-2015?

Thats a good question, what I have been reading seems to indicate 10 years, or the last 5 positions.

This is what it says in their Info Session Packet for your resume:

"For MECN applicants, college activities can be included as well, but primarily you will include post degree work done prior to writing this application."

So I'm sure you wouldn't need to include high school activities at all.

Following! I'm actually not sure if I'm going to apply or not, though... I was all set to start volunteering at Cedars and then COVID happened ? so I am behind the 8 ball there. But they are opening up the volunteer program again, so maybe by the time the application is due I'll at least have a few hours.

Also following!! And also in the same predicament as everyone else ? I was going to start volunteering in a hospital back in March, but then everything shut down in my area and still isn't opening up! And due to the COVID situation, so many other volunteer opportunities are booked up as well. I'm so worried that the complete lack of volunteering will hinder my chances.

Hey everyone!! ? So glad I found this post! I am currently applying as well, and am kind of freaking out. My GPA isn't the best but my prerequisite grades are good. I'm hoping my work experience, volunteering, and Letter of Rec will come through for me. Fingers crossed.

Hi! For some reason, this thread doesn’t have as much activity as the one for 2020. Regardless, I was active on that one and after applying and getting in FROM THE WAITLIST. For reference I was #13. I can guarantee you that grades are not everything. I had a pretty good GPA, from a good undergrad school, but I think what matters more is that you show in your essays why you’re so passionate about being a nurse and how you can bring something different and new to the table.

Even now that classes have begun, I see A LOT of emphasis on diversity and everyone being unique. A few of the cohort I’ve met so far have a wide range of degrees from Art majors, to electrical engineers. That being said, a lot of people have various clinical experience whether it was CNA, patient representatives, or no patient experience. So it’s difficult to say that comparing grades and experience is what will get you in. They do expect you in the program to maintain a 3.0 GPA, so your grades should matter somewhat, but only to show that you can handle the workload.

I also want to mention that due to Covid, in the least, 4-5 students deferred to next year, which means they wouldn’t have to apply again and are offered a spot. That does take away from the other wonderful applicants who could make those spots, but I believe it’s also why I got admitted late! I got admitted 3 weeks before school started so don’t lose hope and don’t give up. Follow up, ask questions. --------------------- has been such a ray of light during the application process and admissions process

And for those who are interested about the class system right now, we are doing all online learning minus the in class labs. Since we don’t know how long covid will be affecting school systems, I think it’s worth taking into consideration that maybe online learning isn’t for you, and that you’re still paying the full tuition. And the previous cohort had clinicals when covid lockdowns happened, and many of them could not do all the rotations that they hoped (maternity, ICU, etc) for obvious safety reasons.

I hope I somewhat eased your worry about the grades, but they are truly just a checklist. Any unique life experiences are definitely weighed heavier than your GPA or clinical experience. Let me know if you have any more questions! Also check out the 2020 thread as that answered a lot of questions too.

Thank you so much @Yuki Minami for this great advice and reassurance! Congrats on getting in and good luck in the program!

Does anyone know if we need to send official transcripts with the UCLA grad application for the MECN program by November 1? Or when is the deadline?

In the information session they said you only need unofficial transcripts for the application, and they only ask for the official ones after you’re admitted.
