UCLA MECN 2021

Published

Hi everyone!

I am planning on applying to UCLA's MECN program for 2021 and since I did not see a thread here yet I wanted to get one going for us to share questions and concerns. Good luck to everyone!

Thank you for the information! Can I you a quick couple of question regarding orientation? It looks like there are 2 orientation that we need to attend, the 1 in July and 1 more in Sept. What’s the difference between those orientation? And last year, was the Summer orientation done in-person?

Hey current MECN 1 here. There are two orientations. One is the general grad student orientation that happens in the Summer, I imagine it’s similar to orientation for undergrad, people from all different programs (MBA, med school, engineering, etc). Getting familiar with campus, resources, etc. This was obviously canceled because of the pandemic but I think there was an online orientation that wasn’t mandatory. Then there was a second orientation the day before classes started that was specific to the MECN program put on by the SON. They talked about the program, specific classes, castle branch (which clears you for clinicals), and a lot of other topics.

Hi there! Last time we know, #5 got accepted based on our FB group. But keep in mind that not many people know and join our FB group ? We have until March 12th to submit our SIR, so you should hear from ucla after then. You can also email Mark to check your current status, many people do that!

Thank you for letting me know! ?

Hi, current MECN here. Just know that last year, we had 14 students from the waitlist. And the 14th student heard back 2 days AFTER school started. So there is SO much time to hear back. Majority of waitlist decreases after the initial acceptances and around the time after orientation (around August). So don't dwell on waiting and get on that epi class requirement! Mark will email you when you get pretty close on the waitlist (around spot 2-3). You can definitely email him for updates but I would wait to not bombard him every week with an update! I tried to stick to once a month and I found out on Sept 1.

Thank you for the tips and for chiming in with details!! I’ll just have to wait patiently then and hope for the best! Luckily I completed epi during my undergrad so I don’t have to worry about that. ?

If anyone needs other advice, feel free to message me through here.

Hi there! I wanted to thank you so much for your advice!

I wanted to message you privately, but says I'm unable to do so. Is there another way I can contact you? I definitely would like to get your thoughts on a few things. I have been in the pursuit of getting accepted to an entry-level program since I graduated in 2017. Since then, I had to take 1 prerequisite course a semester due to working full-time. Definitely mentally drained and discouraged after trying to apply to USF for 2021 & 2022 cohorts & getting waitlisted. I also applied to Western last year, but got rejected. This year I am expanding my options, but at this point I am at the point of giving up & just settling for a 2nd bachelor's degree from West Coast... Anyways.. I'd greatly appreciate your response! Until then, take care.

Hello! Deciding between UCLA and another school. Current MECN students please share your thoughts on program?

Thanks!

Applying in fall. Like others I have no experience to show in nursing per se. I have worked in mental health field (the area of nursing practice I am pursuing) for ~12 years, so hoping that counts for something and perhaps offsets my less than perfect pre-req GPA.

Did you get in?

I reapplied for Fall 2021 and have been working as a CNA almost two years. I completed all my pre-requisites with mostly A's and B's, but I fall short because of my undergrad GPA. At this point, I'm just going to apply to community colleges or proprietary schools. I'm already 34 and feel like I'm getting too old to keep trying to apply to MSN programs.

Did you ever get in?
