Hi everyone!
I am planning on applying to UCLA's MECN program for 2021 and since I did not see a thread here yet I wanted to get one going for us to share questions and concerns. Good luck to everyone!
I've been doing some research into direct entry MSN programs and noticed that although John Hopkins (#1) is ranked higher than UCLA (#20) (in terms of 2021 Best Nursing Schools: Masters) their acceptance rates are much higher than UCLA's. Does anyone have an idea why? I am thinking JHU may simply just have more seats open that allows them to accept students into the university. What are your thoughts?

I had a really hard time parsing out how useful rankings would be for entry level programs like UCLA's MECN. The ranking of masters programs generally would potentially be inclusive of advanced practice NP programs as well as entry level ones like this one so I am not sure if it's the best metric for figuring out how good a program is. I personally weighed things like what hospital systems were affiliated with the school for clinicals/hiring after, what focus the program seemed to have, and location (as I look out the window at snow, LA sounds pretty good right now LOL)... but I definitely felt a bit like I was guessing what with the huge variance in ABSN and entry level masters programs.
It makes a lot of sense to me though that JHU is #1 - they're so highly ranked in everything medical and I know they do a lot of nursing specific research. Another impression I have is that the private programs like Columbia and JHU seem to have bigger cohorts and as private institutions they are super expensive so I could see that impacting acceptance rates.
Either way super excited (and terrified) that we will know soon for better or worse! I am really hoping everyone gets into the program that is best for them be it UCLA or elsewhere!!

I think you are OK! I got a follow up email in January because when I submitted in November I was still waiting on some transcripts so they emailed me when the application was complete after I sent them in. If you had everything in at the time of submission maybe they don't send anything like that. Good luck!!

Yeah I do think it has a lot to do with the number of seats they have. JHU accepts around 160 and Columbia 200. This is the main reason why I decided to apply to those schools in addition some California schools. The prestige of kind of intimidated me but after researching I realized I probably have a better chance there over any school here. Also makes me wonder how they are able to accommodate such large cohorts with clinical placements and all and why that can’t be the norm. Anyway I really hope we hear back soon as in February and not March haha.
