Published

It's that time of year again! I am planning on applying for the Fall 2019 quarter. The summer 2018 information sessions are now open. Who else is applying ?

I got the acceptance today as well! Excited to meet everyone ?

Congrats! The final acceptance from the graduate division? Were you able to log into the portal then?

I didn’t get accepted this year or last but that’s ok! I wanted to share with anyone who was accepted/is on the waitlist that I took epidemiology through UC Berkeley extension last fall thinking it would make me more competitive and I loved it. It’s cheap compared to other options (around $500 when everything is said and done - the online course/book/scheduling the final). It’s online with readings and video lectures from the professors. The only in-person part of the course is the final, which you have to schedule at an exam center (there are instructions for how to do this). I recommend renting the book from amazon. The course has to be completed within less than 5 months (from the start date to the final exam date). It’s tough material but it can definitely be done in as little as 2-3 months if you work at it every day. I really liked it ?

Thanks for the tip!

What's the best way you suggest to study for the course? And is the material more mathematical than anything?

Is anyone still waiting for the final admissions decision?

Received my official letter from the dean yesterday and completed my intent to register!

Hi All,

I received the email acceptance from Rhonda too! I'm looking forward to meeting you all come Fall 2019. ^^

As for the Epi requirement, I still have to take it but I am torn. I want to do it through UCLA bc we could all formally meet each other before the actual start of our classes BUT it's pricey. I work full time and I want to save as much money as possible prior to starting so I think UCB would be a better alternative to save money and time since it's online.

For those wanting to know my background, here it is:

1. Cumulative GPA was a 3.51. I had mostly B+ to B's and few A's in my science pre-req classes, A's for my other non-science classes, and had some AP credit that counted towards my pre-reqs from high school.

2. BS Degree in Food & Nutrition (dietetics emphasis). Completed a year-long internship and am currently a registered dietitian working in a hospital and skilled nursing facility (I had the "direct patient care" they were looking for). For those of you like what is a dietitian?? I assess patients' nutritional status, calculate their nutrition needs, recommend diets, etc. I work closely with the IDT and interview/speak with patients on a daily basis.

3. My 3 letters of rec: 2 from my undergraduate professors that were related to my field (College of Agriculture Department Head and a Food Science professor), 1 from my boss at the hospital (I felt that was more pertinent, she attested to my clinical experience and interactions with patients).

4. Additional extra curricular activities: I was involved in my college of agriculture's honor society during undergrad (initiation chair), was a TA for my professor, had 2 years volunteer experience at UCI (this was NOT recent btw, I volunteered there 2014-2016), and was president of my dietetic internship. All of which I had listed on my resume, in Mark's words "The more the better!" Keep in mind my resume was ONE page.. (Yes, I fit all of that in there thanks to the help of my brother-in-law who actually TOLD me to, and I'm so glad I listened).

If there's anything else you wanted to know, feel free to message me on here. ^_^

I applied to 4 schools in total, CSUN, UCI, CSUF, UCLA. CSUN didn't accept me, but I when I messaged back to ask why, they said I didn't have "direct patient experience" *insert Maury meme, WELL THAT WAS A LIE* I think whoever looked over my app just didn't know what a dietitian was or didn't thoroughly review my application. Anyway, I'm waiting to hear back from UCI and CSUF, but honestly UCLA was/is my #1 and I 100% intend going there with you guys (Go BRUINS!!).

Yay just joined!

And I thought about that too, but decided on UCB extension for epi as well for the cost. Trying to save as much as possible haha.

I'm unable to find the group on Facebook. I searched for UCLA MECN Class of 2021.

EDIT** Never mind. Found it! haha

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how many applicants there were this year?

Hi! I was accepted into the MECN program this year and planning on taking the Epi class starting in June at UCLA. I couldn't find the facebook page for some reason!? Looking forward to meeting everyone!
