UCLA MECN Fall 2014?

Published

Hi- Is anyone applying to UCLA's MECN program for next fall?

At this point, I've been telling all my family/friends who keep asking that I'll know the last day of April. I keep telling myself that too for my own sanity!

At this point, I have also already committed to another program...

BUT if I ever hear from UCLA, I'm willing to let go of that $1,000 deposit!! (as painful as that sounds :sorry:) But then again, I'm right there with all of you -- It's just so difficult and inconvenient because I need to start thinking about my living situation, whether or not I need to take another prerequisite course, and everything else that goes into planning the next year.

And really, as much as I want to, I don't know if I will be able to drop everything and make UCLA work last minute. Talk about that waiting game... :yawn:

@uclatrueblue

yikes! I've never seen a deposit for a program so high. Nonetheless, congrats to you with the program you got accepted to. And yes.. the waiting game continues and it's really agonizing that there's so straight answer from admissions either. Let's keep our heads up high and just hope.. we'll hear something by the end of this month.

How many of you will be taking Eip at ucla if you get in? Given we hear back before the class starts :banghead:

@deekayy

Thank you!! But yes, USD = one heck of a pricetag! :scrying:

If I'm accepted, I will take the class at UCLA. I live in Los Angeles, so it's convenient for me. Someone on the thread mentioned that the schools can guarantee that all accepted MECN students will have a spot in the class. Does that even seem possible? I'd be so excited to meet and take a class with my new fellow MECN buddies!

It's so expensive. I calculated it and it almost comes out to be $1,500 for the epi class at UCLA. I read in previous years some people were bale to take it online for half the cost so maybe I will do that instead.

Oh wow, really? Last summer, I was THIS close to taking the course to just prepare for UCLA. I thought better of it, in case they didn't accept me. But my total was only going to be about $150..

I did the same but two years ago. I think the $150 is for the registration fee, which they did not refund me. I can't find the per unit fee right now but when calculated I remember it being close to $1200.

If you can take it online for cheaper I would. I already took it during undergrad and I wish I would have taken it online. It's learnable without the classroom setting.

If you are admitted to the MECN cohort for the fall, they give you a code (only given to MECNs) to register for this one particular Epi session - so it will be only MECNs and there is room for every single MECN. It's a hard course, even for me, as I had to repeat it again from my undergrad years. I would not recommend taking it online. We all got together for study sessions and started friendships this early. The class is super expensive (I forget the cost), but they charge you grad student fees for this course. So get ready to pay up early on. ------------- (who usually teaches the class) is the sweetest thing you will ever see, but she uses a text co-authorized by a UCLA epidemiologist. A friend of mine who was completing his Epi PhD at the time, said this guy is a really big deal in the Epi field. All this said, it's a good class to prepare you for the numerous research papers you will write later in the program ;-).

Oh that makes sense about the registration fee...crap! I would rather not pay a thousand dollars! But I definitely would love to take the actual class, so I can meet people and start being a Bruin!
