UCLA MECN Fall 2014?

Published

Hi- Is anyone applying to UCLA's MECN program for next fall?

I got into my first choice school, CSULA, so finding out anything from UCLA, accepted or otherwise is just a bonus at this point. One must wonder whether UCLA is going to have THEIR first pick of applicants at this point since they are so tardy with decisions. Many people have probably already decided to go elsewhere for their education.

Could not have said it better myself @Get2theChoppa :up:

Congrats on getting into your first choice school Get2theChoppa! Don't worry if I get in I'll hold it down for you in your place!

Two more weeks; and they will start sending letters!

Good luck guys.

Ah! How did you find that out?

2 more weeks?! The most I ever heard was they were going to let us know "in March or April." The wait is killing me!!! I feel like my whole life is on hold until I hear back. I only applied to one other school and was accepted, but decided not to go there due to cost/location (Western U). So it's UCLA or another year until nursing school. Every time I talk to friends/family, they ask me if I've heard from UCLA yet and I have to say NOPE NOT YET. At this point, I've pretty much convinced myself I'm not getting in. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Congrats Get2theChoppa!! Can I ask what clinical experience you had on your application for CSULA? If I don't get into UCLA this year, I'm definitely applying to Cal State next year. I know they really push that clinical care partners volunteer program but I'm already doing TCAB at Cedars and starting a CNA position on a psych unit so I don't want to pile another commitment on.

Hi EstudienteLA! I too got into CSULA for the program starting this summer and I did not have much clinical experience. I have been a volunteer at LAC+USC for the past 9 months and that is all. I have 18+ years of work experience - mostly in finance and operations. I think I am probably the most non-traditional student accepted this year LOL. My prereq GPA (for CSULA) is around 3.8 and my TEAS score is 99th percentile - so I think that is what got me to the interview portion of the process. I do have to say I have taken a lot from my experience at LAC+USC and was able to talk at length about it in the interview. I was actually asked a question about what I would bring to the group since most of the other interviewees had much more clinical experience than me....so it is important. Get as much as you can, but make it meaningful.

I became a CNA last August. I've worked part time on the weekend with my lisence since then. My clinical experience is not that extensive. In fact, I don't think many people who were accepted had extensive experience. I think program coordinator (PC) is mostly interested in knowing what you have learned about nursing based on the exposure that you have had. So be prepared to remark on that in your personal statement. Interestingly, the PC was most interested in my time with Homeland Security so I'd guess that the PC is really looking to create a diverse cohort. She also asked me what I would uniquely bring to the program. I answered in respect to my international work experiences and people skills which will serve me well in an environment like LA where there exist people from all backgrounds. Also helps to have 2nd language ability. I actually haven't noticed that many hard science majors.

What else? I have a BA and MA. My pre-req gpa was 4.0, but my TEAS was only in the 90th percentile bc I only studied for maybe a week.

Just find something unique about yourself that you can bring and market that. Practice how to interview well and how to control the direction of the interview. I'll be around on the boards for the next few years so I'll be around to answer further questions if you require.

Hey I'll pipe in too. I also applied to UCLA and got in at CSULA. I have about 6 months of volunteer experience at Cedars. I have a 3.75 GPA in the science/math pre-reqs. I scored in the 99th percentile on my TEAS. I have a background in non-profit work. So I'm not sure what got me the interview, honestly. And I didn't feel fantastic about the interview. But it worked out! :)

@Tleem and @GetToTheChoppa

Thank you for sharing! And congrats on your acceptance!

Congrats in CSULA. Did you have ti take the GREs for CSULA?Also if you don't me asking how was your score and what kind if experience do you have? I am seriously considering their program for next year.
