Hello,
I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.
Thanks for your input! Did you have a lot of homework or projects or was it mostly reading materials? How were you assessed in class? By exams or by writing papers?
Fall quarter we had class Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The classes were Primary Prevention, Advanced pathophysiology I, Ethics, and Fundamentals of nursing with Lab. Thursday was all day, the other days were maybe half days. Depending on your strengths (Writing or science), most people had the most trouble with either primary prevention or patho... No one that I know of is working full time and I would highly discourage this unless you want to hate life and risk your success in the program. There are some that work part time and seem to do ok. happy to answer any other questions.
Hey ADE, during fall quarter you will have a real mix of objective tests, papers, and projects. Patho is exclusively objective multiple choice tests, Primary prevention is very writing intensive but also included an objective midterm and final, ethics is a mix of papers and group projects, and Fundamentals is also a mix of objective quizzes, tests, and projects. I know that is not a detailed answer but just to give you some idea what to expect.
It's detailed enough! Thanks for the taking the time, Sandman. Hope to meet you soon! :)

Dear All:Hi. I've been reading posts since late last year but have been too stressed to actually join in the conversation.
I received a letter of acceptance on the 7th. I'm probably the person in the program with the least amount of health care experience, as I am a graphic designer.
If interested, I can elaborate on my approach to the application. I just don't want to make anyone feel worse than he/she already may be feeling. But...perhaps could help for the future.
To those of you with whom I will be studying, HELLO! And, I'll see you in Epidemiology over the summer.
Best.
Hello!
Do you mind sharing with me your application profile? I am education major and UCLA is my first choice...I just dont know if I stand a chance with all the fierce competition :) Congrats again!
Going to the info session helped a lot. They told us exactly what they want to be included in the statement of purpose:*Why you want to be a nurse
*Clear statement of goals
*Reason for selecting UCLA
*Experience in healthcare setting or other relevant experiences and why the experience mattered
*Multicultural experiences such as economic, social, & educational
I included all of these in my statement of purpose. I met their GPA requirement but I didn't think my grades (even my healthcare experience) were competitive enough to get me in. I strongly believe that it was the statement of purpose that gave me that extra umph since UCLA does not have an interview process. Because MECN is a graduate program, it involves more writing and research than a regular RN program would. The SON wants to know that you'll be able to communicate your thoughts clearly on paper. It's probably one method in predicting your success in their program.[ Dear ADEcstatic, I'm planning to enroll for MSN at UCLA next fall 2012, and i am so nervous about my Statement of Purpose. I do not know where to start, and I am afraid that I might write it like a personal statement! May I please ask you some experiences for writing Sop and the enrollment process? I'm an international applicant so I'm not very confident with the high competition rate in UCLA. Thank you very much!
Best Regards,

Hi Annngo,
I didn't have much experience writing personal statements. I've never been a great writer so the SOP was very difficult for me. I think I spent at least a month writing and re-writing my statement. What I found helpful was having two or three proofreaders read my personal statement and asking for their feedback. They helped me identify areas that sounded weak or unclear. Just understand that your personal statement will never be perfect but by asking for help, it will give you an idea of how your statement may sound to other people. Last year was the first time I attempted to apply to nursing programs and I've been very blessed in getting into UCLA. Just tackle each component of the application one at a time. Prioritizing what I needed to do helped me keep organized.
I wish you the best of luck during this stressful time and just remember to ask for help when you need it. :)
