Hello :)
Anyone else applying for UBC's September 2014 intake? If so, let's get through this process by communicating with each other!
wow i've been reading this post from the very start and can't help but get a little discouraged.
congratulations to all for getting accepted! and especially to star lite for getting accepted today!!
i am trying to apply for the 2015 take in, and i've learned a lot from the posts.
these posts got me quite worried about the supplemental as my volunteer lengths aren't as dashing. (1-2,5years)
-hospital volunteer which i will start next week (so when i apply it'll be roughly arond 7-8 months?)
-year of officce work at at an accountant's office
-club member excutive/leader position
-volunteering at community health centre for the disable and music therapy
-volunteering at health care home with elderly adults with dementia
-lead church worship team for 3 years in the last 5 years
also, since quality is important on your supplemental, i am especially worried becauase i am not the best writer in the world
gpa, i would still hae to work on because from these posts it's safe to have it around 80ish?
if any of you have any ideas or comments or advices for me, please feel free to say anything because anything would help right now very happy for you guys and i admire all your efforts so much.
Hi Baldeagle,
I wouldn't worry too much about your extracurricular activities having to be exactly in the medical field, but maybe say what you learnt from each one and what skills you learnt that would apply to nursing. For example, in my application I thought of the 3 best qualities that a nurse would have (empathy, continuous development, communication) and wrote an intro paragraph (why I wanted to become a nurse and introduced these concepts) then broke down each paragraph (3 body paragraphs with each quality as the subject per paragraph) and gave specific examples from my work, school, and volunteer life that demonstrated that I possessed these qualities. Then I finished with a conclusion paragraph and wrapped it up. I scored very high on my supplemental application so I think they really liked this and others I spoke to at the interview seemed to break down their supplemental in the same way. There were a few that had written personal stories (ex: I took care of a sick parent or family member and this made me want to get into nursing) but the majority of people didn't have this experience so applied their volunteer, work exp, and educational exp to their ability to be a nurse. Hopefully that makes a bit of sense?
It sounds like you have a lot of good experience - I was surprised that when I was there that not a lot of people even had science degrees! I did mine in chemistry and molecular biology and I think that might have stood out as well but not too sure.
Anyways, don't be discouraged - I think you will do great and at least you can apply and see what happens! Kwantlen also has an accelerated program as well.
Best of luck!
Oh and everyone else - have you been able to accept your admission off in CSS yet? Mine still says it is under review... I am guessing it just takes a few days. Hopefully it is before the cut off date!
Thanks,
Kels
they sent it in an email ..... maybe only rejected and wait listed people received it? They don't put the interview score on there for some reason.
I scored really well on everything there (GPA, supplemental, and extracurricular were what they scored) so I must not have done well at all in the interview as I was wait listed.... I'm in now though! :)
You don't need to rent next to the campus. Clinicals start in the third week of September and can be anywhere, incl. Peace Arch and Surrey for the first 4 months. Your location, six kids, and lack of vehicle will not be taken into consideration. Starting January the farthest hospital most likely will be Royal Columbian, untill you get ESN/preceptorship (fifth semester) as far as Peace Arch. If you don't drive, aim for Broadway corridor (99 B-line): UBC, VGH, Mt St Joseph's, connections to SkyTrain and DT (St Paul's). Enjoy the summer, you'll get next one in two years.

Thank you for the advice ogormankelsey, I agree, I think I have to pay the deposit. Timing is so much in life and I think this example illustrates it perfectly. I emailed UBC admissions today to tell them my situation, but I don't have that much hope that they will get back to me by tomorrow. I imagine it takes a while to process all of the responses and there probably are a bunch of us in a similar position. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.
