Hey guys,
I'm really nervous about applying to UBC Nursing because I know how competitive the Nursing field is . I feel a lot of pressure because my dad was against me going into nursing at first (wanted me to be something 'more' like a doctor or pharmacist) and if I don't get in to a nursing school it will be an extra big slap in the face!
My last 30 credits are slightly over 3.0 at SFU and I'm going to be done my pre-requisites by Dec 2011. (Does this mean I can apply for the Sept 2012 intake?) For volunteering I've done a few things since high school such as volunteering at the geriatrics department at the hospital, way-finding volunteer at the hospital, "Hoops for Heart" for the Heart and Stroke foundation, "Have a Heart" Fundraiser for the Global Youth Fund where I raised money for malaria nets; and currently, I help out my bros' soccer team and I am starting another volunteer position at a crisis line and planning another fundraiser - but I'm not sure if this is enough to get in...
I'm really worried and any advice or tips will be appreciated because I really want to get into UBC Nursing more than I want anything right now!
Hi SIMBURGER,
I graduated from UBC Nursing this May (I was part of the first cohort to run through the new nursing program at UBC...I was admitted for the Sept 2009 intake). The competitive average is on the high side--I was told that the average admission grade was 80% in my year. I had slightly over 80% from my most recent 30 credits.
That said, grades isn't everything. The supplemental is worth roughly half the weight of getting an interview. Once you get the interview, whether you get in or not depends on your interview score. Strong, solid volunteer experiences are good, but so is the way you showcase them in your application. Interview skills are a must.
Lastly, make sure that you meet all of UBC Nursing's requirements for admission! And yes, if your pre reqs are done by Dec 2011, you can definitely apply for the Sept 2012 intake.
Good luck!
Hey I'm also going to apply for ubc nursing 2012, I'm from UofT and I've always wanted to go to UBC! Hopefully I'm going to rock this last semester and apply with ~80% average, I've also started doing extracurriculars like volunteering at a nursing home, working with the first-aid team on campus, etc. What worries me are the amount of seats they reserve for out of province students and the fact that no GPA will guarantee you a spot (I read about an applicant who got rejected with an 82 and solid extracurriculars >_Another UofT-er :) I graduated last November with my Hons.B.Sc and this January 2012 I am starting the York Nursing program.
Word of caution re BCIT application - they DO NOT accept out-of-province applicants and no, you will not find this information explicitly stated anywhere on the website (not to my knowledge, at least!). I applied online and after several calls to BCIT, I was able to find out that they only consider B.C. residents.

Thanks alot for the heads up and saving me a bit in application fees! =) but darn that really sucks, I'll just have to try for the UBC Van and Okanagan programs then. If you don't mind me asking, did you also apply for UBC this past cycle and what were your GPA/extracurriculars like?
I think I'm going to apply this year as well for the Sept 2012 intake although I don't think my chances are very good. I'm pretty convinced I won't get in but it doesn't hurt to try.
I've done a lot of volunteer work but most of it isn't in the health sector. The only health related volunteer work I've done is at a senior home, the Heart and Stroke foundation and I'm about to start for an AIDS/HIV clinic next month. My other volunteer experiences include the receptionist for a piano studio and as a photographer for a non-profit organization.
Hopefully I can get my grades up to about 78-80% this year...
I'm currently a UBC arts student, 3rd year, majoring in art history and minoring in 19th century studies. If I don't get in this year, I'll probably finish my degree and then apply for a readmission next year.
I was wondering, I read from previous years they send out invitation invites around april? That means by april they're already done evaluating you based on grades and supplementary activities but the school year isn't even over yet, so are they using the 30 credits not including the courses that ends in April 2012?
