Hey guys,
I'm really nervous about applying to UBC Nursing because I know how competitive the Nursing field is . I feel a lot of pressure because my dad was against me going into nursing at first (wanted me to be something 'more' like a doctor or pharmacist) and if I don't get in to a nursing school it will be an extra big slap in the face!
My last 30 credits are slightly over 3.0 at SFU and I'm going to be done my pre-requisites by Dec 2011. (Does this mean I can apply for the Sept 2012 intake?) For volunteering I've done a few things since high school such as volunteering at the geriatrics department at the hospital, way-finding volunteer at the hospital, "Hoops for Heart" for the Heart and Stroke foundation, "Have a Heart" Fundraiser for the Global Youth Fund where I raised money for malaria nets; and currently, I help out my bros' soccer team and I am starting another volunteer position at a crisis line and planning another fundraiser - but I'm not sure if this is enough to get in...
I'm really worried and any advice or tips will be appreciated because I really want to get into UBC Nursing more than I want anything right now!

Hello!
I don't mean to bring bad news or anything but I have heard that UBC nursing is one of the toughest out here to get into. I think that a 3.0 GPA (What I have as well) is just not enough to get in. However, BCIT is a really good school too for Nursing and you will complete the degree in 3 years instead of 4. Good luck!
Hey,
This is sooo depressing ... thanks for the feedback!
I know I completely agree. I'm so ready to start the program but it's so competitive. Just apply everywhere and by all means, apply to UBC. You may as well try!!
I e-mailed UBC Nursing and the lady informed me that the competitive GPA for UBC Nursing is 75-78% and my gpa of 3.2 at SFU convers to about 75% at UBC, so I MIGHT have a shot!!! I'm way too bummed right now... if I knew I was going to pursue nursing earlier I would have tried for UBC-O, BCIT, Douglas - straight from highschool! *Sigh*
BCIT requires at least 30 credits of post secondary before they consider the application so your previous schooling will help with that!!! I have 62 credits and have applied for the Jan 2012 semester. Don't be bummed, we'll get there someday lol.
I tried applying to BCIT, but they disable my account for some reason :S, so now I have to call the office and have them enable it again! Gosh, I feel like a failure! Do you know if BCIT looks at your last 30 credits as well? To be a competitive applicant they require a minimum of 20 credits I think.

Hi :) I have applied to the Jan 2012 intake for BCIT. I have spent the last year and a half taking courses to be competitive. Successful applicants have at least 60 post secondary credits now. They recommend that you take some of the courses from the program before you start- Libs 7001, Libs 7002, first year English, 2 psych courses and 2 other liberal electives (at a 200 level or higher)....They also like to see some hands on volunteer experience. good luck everyone!!
Have you applied anywhere other than BCIT?? I'm soo anxious!! I wish they would tell us soon haha but I know that would be too good to be true.
I won't be applying elsewhere. I know everyone writes the same exam in the end, but BCIT is the best place for me. We will be in clinical 2 days a week starting week 2 and since I have done most of the "on your own time" courses, I'll have at least partial summers off to hang with my little girl. I am also so anxious!!! I check my mail 50 times a day. there is a thread for BCIT JAN2012 intake on cnsa.ca, you just have to request permission to post.:)
Thanks! I'll check it out!

hi simburger,
i have been accepted into the UBC program for this Sept 2011. My average was at 78% and I was able to get in. You have to remember that your supplemental application also weighs into you admissions, so as long as you have well rounded experience, you will have a good chance. UBC is definitely more competitive as it has a longer application and requires an MMI style interview, but based on how you described yourself, it is worth applying!
Good luck!
