Hey I’m #25 and haven’t heard anything yet. I’ll update if an offer comes through ?

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone knows anything about the N95 Respirator fit test? I've contacted a few places about fitting but they are saying I'm required to bring my own mask.. Seems backwards to me as you'd think you'd be fitted prior to purchasing one (also think COVID might be playing a factor here). Confused by the lack of info. on this. If anyone can offer any guidance I'd greatly appreciate it!

Try booking a mask fitting with Vancouver First Aid (link below)-- I booked with them, and they are recommended by UBC Nursing. I called them yesterday, and they specifically told me that they just received N95 masks, which they can provide you (for a cost of $20, but I'm not sure if this is for a single mask or a package).

For your information, there is a distinction between KN95 and N95: the K stands for 'knockoff,' so KN95 are knockoff masks. We are required to have N95. According to UBC/BC Health Authorities, any brand of mask will do as long as they have the N95 component implemented into the mask. But, here is the critical part: When you do your mask fitting, you are certified to wear only that model and size of mask (see the PDF resource I attached to confirm this). This is important because you will be repeatedly using N95 masks and throwing them away after 1 use, so you need to be certain that you have a consistent supply of that model mask you are certified for. If you get fitted for some random N95 mask that you won't be able to find in a hospital or clinic, then your certification is useless. In the UBC School of Nursing FAQ they specify the models used commonly in clinics: "The masks generally supplied in the relevant clinical placements in the BC Health Authorities include: 3M Aura 1870+ (3M 1870 to be phased out by 2016), 3M 1860, 3M 1860S, Kimberly Clark Regular, Kimberly Clark Small." With that in mind, you will need to be fitted for those model of masks.

I will call Vancouver First Aid today to check if they have those models of N95 available.

Very helpful resource from UBC and BC health authorities regarding N95 mask use: "http://med-fom-pediatrics.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2015/04/Respiratory-Protection-Program-FAQ142.pdf "

I hope this helps, take care ?

Update from my most recent comment regarding the mask fitting:

I just called Vancouver First Aid. They do have 3M N95 masks, and you will get a certification for either a 3M 1870 or 1860, but you will not leave the session with the 3M mask since they are one-use and will be thrown away. However, you will still leave with a certification for a 3M N95 mask, which will satisfy the mask fitting requirement for UBC. Therefore, the best option is to just pay the $50 since finding your own 3M mask in Vancouver is impossible now.

I'm a UBC grad and have tons of UBC scrubs left over (that are needed for clinical). I'm usually an XS but have both XS and XXS tops available (they fit big) and XS bottoms. They're in great condition if anyone wants them. please email me at [email protected] to get in touch. They're very expensive at the uniform store so I really don't recommend buying them new. I also have a pair of size 7 completely leather sketcher shoes that are in excellent condition that you'll need for clinical that I'm selling (bought for $120) ? I recommend having at least 2 pairs of scrubs for clinical.

OMG CONGRATS!! Thanks for letting us know here ?

Is anyone here #28-34 on the waitlist? If so, has anyone from these numbers gotten accepted yet?

I'm #28 and I haven't heard back yet!

Congratulations to everyone that got off the wait list! I am sure all of you will become wonderful nurses and succeed in nursing school. To those who are still waiting to hear back, I understand your anxiety, as I am waiting as well; however, I think it may be a good idea to plan accordingly for alternatives as there is a very good chance that there are no seats remaining. Here is what I’ve gathered from the posts so far, which may be useful to those who are still waiting just as I was. I hope this eases your mind and helps you decide on how you would like to proceed with your next steps.

This is based on the assumption that every person who has accepted their offer from the wait list has posted on this forum, and every person who declined the offer has not posted on this forum

Initial Offer Deadline: June 22nd

1st Round Wait list Offers

  • June 22 – June 29
  • Approximately 18 seats offered: #1-18
  • Confirmed accepted offers: #1, #6, #9, #11, #12, #13, #18 (-6 seats available)
  • Potential seats remaining: < 12 seats

2nd Round Wait list Offers (Declined Offers from 1st Round Wait list)

  • June 29 – July 6
  • Approximately 6 seats offered: #19-24
    • Last confirmed ACCEPTED from 1st round: #18
    • Last confirmed WAITING from 1st round: #25
  • Confirmed accepted offers: #21, #22, #23 (-3 seats available)
  • Potential seats remaining: 3 seats

3rd Round Wait list Offers (Declined Offers from 2nd Round Wait list)

  • July 6 – July 13
  • Approximately 3 seats offered: #25-27
    • Last confirmed ACCEPTED from 2nd round: #23
    • Last confirmed WAITING from 2nd round: #28
  • Confirmed accepted offers: #25, #26, #27 (-3 seats available)
  • Potential seats remaining: 0 seats

I really hope that I am wrong, but in this case, it is evident that the number of seats available is decreasing each week, and there are still lots of people waiting to receive their offers. As for myself, I’m quite far down the list and have accepted that I’ll have to try again for the next intake. You’ve all done so well to have received a seat on the wait list and your ability to be a nurse is not reflective of the school’s decision. I am certain all of us will get into a nursing program in the near future, so please don’t lose hope. Wish you all the best in your future endeavours and maybe hope to meet some of you in next year’s cohort! Don’t worry-- a year goes by in a flash! (Can you believe it’s already been half a year since we’ve submitted our applications? ?)
